In Memoriam…

The first copy of the NME I bought (after seeing them on TOTP), can still picture the spot in my local newsagents where they were pilled up. Bought it religously every week for years after that.

I got rid of mine some years ago for some reason. My older brother used to get Sounds… Think that was more rock orientated but I could be wrong. Same as yourself though I bought it for a fair few years and then found myself gravitating more to the dance/house section over time… Cue Mixmag, DJ Magazine, Blues & Soul (although difficult to source in N Wales) and Mixmag Update. Used to be a real event getting stuff like that and searching the recs.

Gareth Evans

This is the funniest story:

Gareth Evans already seemed the most unlikely manager for the band who years later confessed that they had chosen him as they were in need of anyone who could give them a break but also found him amusing and his over the top antics that were almost like a parody of the rock manager.
When they first met him at his office, after answering an advert in City Life, he famously told them he could sell anything and dropped his trousers to show off briefs he was selling and talked about gold bullion he was dealing in and waved wads of cash around.

It was so much like some sort of Carry On film that the core of the Roses fell in love with his blarney and also the fact that told them that they could rehearse at his International clubs on the stage, through the full PA, which the ever pragmatic band saw as a great opportunity as well getting free access to his clubs for all the gigs with the added bonuses of free drinks.

Nice tribute from Tim Burgess in The Times.

Mani was more than just Stone Roses bassist: he was our older brother

There’s a funny little anecdote about Mani on David Holmes insta involving Ibiza and ‘Tim Henman’

I think the big difference between the 2 LPs for me is the debut has a real lightness of touch and space in the sound whereas Second Coming sounds a bit lumpen and heavy in parts.
There is stuff on there I think is really good but a 10 track, 45 minute LP with the Something’s Burning sound/direction would have made for a better album imo but alas it’s all speculation now.

I think I remember Ian saying some years later that the overdriven guitar dubs were a result of John’s cocaine consumption at the time, and you can sort of feel that. But his intricate melodies elevate it beyond pretension, and when added to Manis counter melodies and Reni’s irresistible funky percussion its just magic

I think its fascinating that essentially John, and Reni basically live recluse. John I think is out generations Eric Clapton. Arguably better. He looked so uncomfortable on that media tour with Liam Gallagher a couple of years ago

This. A real comedown record, metaphorically and literally. Way too much Led Zep guitar wankery, less groove overall. My favourites are the ‘trad’ Roses tracks - Ten Storey Love Song, How do you sleep? (although I don’t mind Tightrope and Tears).

I remember buying it and being WTF have they done?!

for me, the real issue was the sort of unfulfilled promise of fool’s gold and one love - i was thinking they were going in more of a clubbier direction with sampled breakbeats and production tricks that would thrill dancefloors, and instead got “sticky fingers” guitar tone and blooz riffs.

and at that time, in that moment - that style of music did not speak to me. it was 1994, i’m in the states, surrounded by guitars. i didn’t expect them to go all IDM or anything but i was really hoping for something more “morning dove white” and not so, i don’t know… ben harper?

Totally agree. They should have been more Mondays-esque IMO

I know a lot of us here will have at least one Pacific Rhythm label release in their collection - D.Tiffany, Khotin, Ex-Terrestrial, Unknown Mobile, Space Ghost, Florist. Hopefully the label continues in his legacy.
