Very sad news.

Brown Sugar really changed things for me, it felt like it heralded in a new era of soul. As a second album I do find Voodoo incredibly rich.

Voodoo is one of those albums you can just live in for days. Glad we caught him in 2015 on the Black Messiah tour. Standing on line to get in, it was kind of like a group therapy session “Wow, didn’t think we’d ever see him again…” “Been worried about him…” RIP to a real one.

Oh man. That first album got played repeatedly in our house then Voodoo was just ridiculous and in a totally different direction. Was lucky enough to hear and see him live a number of times. It was always pretty special. So sad. A troubled soul. X

One of my first visits to NYC was in 1995. You literally couldn’t escape Brown Sugar. It was all over the airwaves.

…and then came Voodoo. Wow!

What a legacy. Poor dude. RIP.

never liked kiss. but hey, their record sales probably fueled a lot of oddball projects on the casablanca label. without kiss, would we ever have had “walk the night”?

KISS were my first musical obsession as a 7 year old kid. I spent so much time time in primary school drawing their faces in my exercise books when I should have been paying attention to the teacher, and had my bedroom walls totally covered with posters to the point where there were no gaps.

Essentially a boyband/bubblegum group, but a paradise for an enchanted kid who loved all the music and merch - there was a lot of it to enjoy!

Ace Frehely was Jimmy Page to me before I discovered Jimmy Page - I was too young to know if he was actually a great guitarist, but he looked cool as hell and had a guitar that shot fireworks - what’s not to love about that?!

I also love how much he annoyed Gene and Paul in interviews by just showing up pissed and goofing off, much to the chagrin of his long suffering and way too serious bandmates.

also, this is a jam…

New York Groove is superb. Remember hearing it at the end of a gangster movie which I can’t recall the name off and buying it immediately.

Optimo also dropped this beauty into Black Betty when they played at Micks Garage in Hackney around 2018 ish. R.I.P.
