Idle Chatter

Whether you like the roses or not, you can’t mess with Reni. One of the greats.

I spoke to Mani in 2009 about a Roses reunion when he was at the back of my house having a smoke.

His best mate Al lived in the gate keepers lodge behind me and was getting married and Mani was his best man that day.

He was supposedly on his arse and not earning anything from being in Primal Scream. We spoke about everything United (I already knew him from around town and from going to the match) and got on to the topic of the Roses.

‘My pension’ as he called it, although he said a reunion was doubtful as ‘Browny’ was doing well with his solo stuff and didnt fancy going back. The other three needed it as Squire had sacked music off and concentrated on his art stuff, while Reni had completely gone off grid.

I’m glad he got his payday as hes a great lad.

Here he is with my lad who was 2 at the time….

Going back to Oasis……my mates daughter watched a the fa cup semi against Chelsea with Noel on saturday (her fella is head of corporate at city) and he was in their box.

She said he was lovely and talked non stop about his mum and how she wont allow either of them to look after her financially. He mentioned she wouldnt even let them buy her a new garden gate when she was desperate for one

I always thought he came off as a bit aloof and arsey, and Liam was the more likeable one. But she said he was really nice and charming.

The Stone Roses reputation has been sullied by the association with Oasis and, more specifically, with the luddite-ry of many Oasis fans. Obviously John Squire’s collaboration with Noel hasn’t helped matters so it’s not purely down to bad luck! The Roses nowadays get lumped in with britpop, adidads, Wellends, lad’s music which I find sad really, and it discourages new listeners. Every now and then though I’ll hear something like Standing Here or Something’s Burning and be reminded how amazing they were.

Heard similar about Liam from one of the OH’s mates - mate and sister took their mum to Dublin for the weekend and were in the same hotel as Liam. He was absolutely charm personified when they bumped into him in the bar and when he heard they came from Moston bought them drinks all night.

That’s a new one to me lol

Massive fan at 14, lots of the positive comments here resonate with me - but the Roses went downhill fast with Second Coming, a huge let down after a long wait. Remember being gutted when I first heard Love Spreads. That’s were the dad rock started.

Finally saw them at the Brixton Academy all-nighter in Dec 95. A good night with some great moments, but no Reni, and really the magic had already gone.

Moston.

Knocked about there in the late 80’s with the Northside lot.

Was a rough place but full of good people :+1:

It’s the OH who has the Moston connection. I was very definitely North London in the late 80s rather than North Manchester

I grew up in Harpurhey, makes Moston look like Knightsbridge

Yep, Roses came on late and Dreadzone came on even later. Rest of the night was all DJs but no idea who.
