Like the 60’s. If you can remember any of it, you weren’t there.
I was at Spike Island. It was shite.
Me and my mates got off well before the end.
Shackleton at bloc 2011 with the fire alarm going off was class
not sure I’ve been at anything that widely considered “legendary” but definitely have had my share of memorable nights. On that comes to mind is a BBE night at The End in late 99/early 2000. I think it was a launch party for a Keb Darge comp or something.
I ended up in there on my own as my mate cancelled on me at the last minute and I was already on the train into town, so rather than meeting them beforehand I ended up in the club super early.
Shortee Blitz warmed up playing a load of my favourite golden era hip hop, followed by DJ Spinna and Kenny Dope. Jazzy Jeff was a no-show so Spinna and KD then went back to back (literally standing back to back) on 4 decks going tune for tune at one point (I think) playing all sorts of fun stuff. And It was in The End which made it even better. I had to stay until the trains were running again so pretty much did the whole night start to finish.
I went to a great BBE night in kings cross in the 2000’s, think it was Canvas. dimitri from paris, jazzy jeff, giles peterson and loads more. those were ace parties.
Might’ve been at that too. Having a real moment when Gilles P played ‘jazz room’. Queue chaos outside IIRC
My only memory is being in the dimitri room and a group of older heads singing along to love committee just as long as i got you. Had my photo taken with dimitri at the end and I looked a mess haha
I remember at least 2 gigs where he turned up in a full dinner jacket!
Daft Punk dj’ing at Slam’s Never Get Out The Boat party on the Renfrew Ferry September 1995. 600 people, what a night
Berghain on 1st September 2007 - unforgettable
Frankie Knuckles in a hotel bar on NYE in Sydney 2008
Weatherall, Harvey, Glen Gunner etc in Edinburgh for The Brain tour 1990
That weekend Nicky Holloway did at Eurodisney in 1993 - Jesus that was messy. It was my 21st on the Friday night
Some of the nights I’ve been lucky enough to be at. Wether they’re legendary or not who knows but they’ll stay with me forever
Proper 90’s flyer, full of names spelt incorrectly.
Haha spot on.
Fucking M People as well.
Peak N Holloway bugle years
Orde Michael - like a techno George Michael tribute
Chicago Jackmaster tour nov 1987. Sasha at Ricky’s in Leeds, 1989. Hacienda 10th birthday party 1992 with Frankie Knuckles. First ever back to basics (91?!), first or second (can’t remember now) most excellent with a dance floor PA by Mr Monday. Greg Wilson’s comeback gig at The Key in Kings X 2003, the disco equivalent of the Manchester Free Trade Hall Sex Pistols gig. Can’t have been more than 30 people there.
But to top it all the student party at Oak House university halls of residence with The Chemical Brothers DJing. November 1991. Obviously they were still second year History students then and not The Chemical Brothers. I remember absolutely nothing about it other than going home with a girl who looked not dissimilar to Vanessa Paradis and who I spent the next 3 years with.
808 State at the GMEX in Manchester in 1990 and Konspiracy after - some gaff that
Terrifying place!
One that I felt was legendary and one I was super pleased to have attended was Velvet Underground at Wembley Arena in 1993 with the original line up. That was a vibe. Beautiful sunny day, beautiful people and the arena air thick with hash.
Can you remember who played? I saw a show in '87 (possibly '86) at an under-18’s night in Southampton where (i’m pretty sure) Vince Lawrence and Jesse Saunders DJ’ed and there was a PA or two. Details are very fuzzy and i’ve always thought it was '86 because it seemed to be the first time we heard Jack Your Body and House Music Anthem etc. I’ve never been able to find out anything else about it.
Couple I can remember, mainly due to hearing a few classics for the first time…
Shoom - Dancing in a dry ice cloud with pink strobe to Your Love, totally lost it.
Body & Soul - Hearing Jaguar for the first time and the place going wild, conga of topless muscle mary’s* dancing round the place, and the best dancers I’ve seen anywhere ever.
*not sure if one can say that anymore, apologies.
