Home listening set up

Looks lovely!

If you need subwoofer CNC plans I have some for my homegrown 15" bass reflex, and a few others from more established plans I’ve sketched up over the years.

Thanks very much for the offer, I’ll bear that in mind.

My listening space is finally complete with the acquisition of a brand new Ecler Warm 2 mixer over the NYE break. I’m really happy with how it’s looking and sounding, which is great because this year marks 10 years since I’ve gotten into this DJing thing for real, and it all began because I just like listening to music so much. Nothing like gifting myself a nice upgrade.

Most of the gear was put in place late last year when I moved and came into some extra spending money. The little Rega Brio R amp is a star, perfectly driving the punch-above-their-weight Ellipson Heritage XLS11 speakers. Who knew British and French could work so well? 2024 was a roller coaster ride of a year for me, lots of deep downs but also a few peaks too, like moving to a new house and getting engaged. At the tail end of the year though we had torrential rain here and I wasn’t at home during one particularly bad storm. Some water got in and dripped over my setup, victimizing my old Allen & Heath 42 and a few (generic white) record covers. It was the perfect excuse - that and a quick 5 day trip to Paris over NYE - to bite the bullet and finally get the Ecler. Now I might just get some new cartridges/needles if I do make it to Japan for the Honeymoon at the end of the year, but honestly I’m very happy with what I have. Nothing broke the bank, and it all sounds great. Now I just need space for more records!

Looks great. (I confess, at first I thought the lamp was a part of the amp lol)

It’s a lovely set-up. The Impulse section of your collection is forever growing. I have the same amp, but black - I really love it. Your lamp also threw me too - I was wondering if it was some crazy pre- amp added on. Ive found it to be a great machine- mine gets used every day extensively and I’ve had it for a good few years now. Enjoy the tunes!

A few people thought that too, even ones who have come here to listen hahahaha. I call it the Egg Yolk!

I wish I could grow that section more but the prices for those albums are growing faster than I can keep up! Lots to go still, but I try to add to it every time I can.

Agreed about the Rega amp, it’s such a nice piece of kit - especially for the price.

Think the brio is now discontinued for the io now. Kind of in the market for a new smaller amp and would fit the bill but not sure I cab justify laying out to replace my marantz amp for basically reducing the footprint and not sure there would be much difference in performance.

They still make both. The io has less inputs and lower wattage, and sounds great too, but the Brio still exists. Io a bit less expensive.

this pair of enormous freaks were stood by the roadside on my way home, rude not to pick them up tbh. they are absolutely huuuge! Goodmans Magister, 15-inch drivers, 50w, manufactured somewhere between 1969-1971. not sure if they work yet, just thinking about how i’m going to sneak them in past my wife

You’ve reminded me to post this pic. These cabinets have been ‘welcoming’ punters to this fairly dire spot for about a year now…

Our home sanctuary:

  • Klipschorn (1993)
  • Tannoy Berkeley (1983)
  • Mark Levinson No. 29 x 2
  • Condesa Lucia
  • Technics SL-1200MK3D x 2
  • Audio-Technica VM540ML x 2

It’s a bit embarrassing having two sets of speakers set up in the living room like this, but we make good use of them: the Tannoys are the daily couch listeners, and when they’re not in use, the horns are playing when doing stuff around the house, at dinner, and for house parties we have here every three months (our neighbours are wonderful).

Everything bar the Tannoys also leave the living room every three months to join another pair of Klipschorns for public dance parties we host.

We’re renting, so I have to deal with the wall-fixed, uneven MDF “shelf” that the turntables and mixer are sitting on. One day, I’d love to get a custom-built booth unit and shelving.

I’ve spent years biding my time waiting for deals on all this gear. I’m very grateful.

If anyone’s ever in Melbourne and wants to come over to share some music, you’re very welcome!

That’s a glorious set up! I’d love to catch one of the parties when I’m back in Melbourne. Easter 2026 is looking likely!

Does anyone know what this unit is?

It’s connected to a rotary mixer set up.
