Greasy Spoon Thread

Great thread. I love a fry up in Scotland. With dumpling or white pudding.

There used to be a decent greasy spoon on Judd st round the corner from King’s Cross (London). Cant remember the name.

And a decent one in Willesden Green where I lived. Had an awning outside it. One hot day I walked out after a big breakfast - totally hung over but feeling that I was on the up- then a pigeon in the awning shat all over me. I was covered. And scunnered (feeling sick). The ying and the yang of the greasy spoon experience. Like life.

You can’t eat a fry up al fresco, we’re not European.

It was a willesden green awning: one of those old tatty stripey numbers that cover 4 feet between the road and the entrance to the greasy spoon. No pretence of alfresco. This was mainly used as protection from the pissing rain for passing custom and nowt else. Which is actually quite kind.

(Though on the day I was there, it was boiling!)

But not a greasy spoon though! & lots of Avacado

For Nottingham - Bobbers Mill & Daleside are the 2 classic ones left but suspect more they have just hung on rather than food quality

For London I rated the Regency but not been recently

Marias in Borough was great ( a constant pan of bubble) but Terry’s from Southwark bought recently
Terrys is meant to be good but not been - Sort of ponsey ( prices / name their butcher) not ponsey ( full english the min event)

Actual Picture at Marias 10y ago with my boat scrubbed out
£5 rump steak bap / Eddy Yates on left / Maria serving

The prostitutes cafe in radford was our go to when we were in mapperley park, now called Jukebox I think.

Regency still decent. This was from the annual Faithfanzine Forum Christmaa gathering in Dec 24.

And then there’s always The Hawksmoor breakfast for two

Shame I deleted my old Insta and FB as I used to get all over London in a previous job and had a load of #howlerscafetours reviewed on there. This led to a spin off #howlersfryups, where I’d cook a full English most week’s and people would review the picture. Some of the comments were hilarious. Back when SM was actually good fun. Some pics would generate over 150 comments - from the placement of the cutlery, to the choice of placemat. @dom_moir was regularly riled by my knife being the wrong way around.
