The backups are vital. I went to a party with one USB and the link between the decks wasn’t working. Having two USBs would have solved the problem but I had to play jukebox style off one deck. Total f****** amateur. Felt like a right idiot. Never again!
These are supposed to be super stable, right?
Yeah, I’ve used them for quite a while. Only ever had one stop working. And that was resolved with a reformat
Yep, always carry 2!
Tip, put each USB in a different bag or item of clothing. I have learnt this the hard way
What happened to the guys who would carry records for djs? They must have a story or two to tell…
Here’s a tip. Get a card with no foreign currency transaction fees and with a decent exchange rate. Don’t use your usual bank account card.
I have 4 hard drives I can’t access, an iPhone, and a small stack of records with a Bluetooth speaker setup and a shitty Crosley? (I can’t speak) for listening. So yeah, I guess you could say I’m going digital. Paying for music is a fucking bank loan right now so my go to is Spotify/Apple music and I will most likely keep on suffering until I have $200, two turntables and a microphone…
I think the line is “How do you make a small fortune running a record label? Start with a large one.”
A small fortune? If we all teamed up we could launder all our money and just release a few singles
the one I heard recently was ‘how do you make a million dollars? start with two million dollars and open a restaurant’
When I play with one deck I call that Mancuso style. It’s about allowing the audience to hear the song the way the artist intended it to be heard, from the beginning to the end. DJ Sprinkles does that sometimes too. Nothing wrong with that style of mixing.
And the reality was that no one noticed!
Which is testament to (1) I was playing tunes they loved and that’s all that matters (2) it’s often only DJs who get hung up on the quality of mixes/mixing in key/technical stuff.
Very true. Unless it’s clanging all over the place nobody gives a shit if you’ve let one record end and then one begin or done a quick blend.
Though I’ll a admit to making it all up and all of the music, I’m totally in support of every kind of classic Dj shit, like radio mixers, volume knobs, beat matching, edits, covers, techno, house, and the beautiful Balearic beat of my soul. I’m totally loyal to the shit I believe in but that’s not subtracting any business between me and a turntable any time soon! Already have enough problems choosing a mixer and doing fraud on credit card - sal p, also I’m gonna plan so many fun times at home beforehand that there will be some degree of organization, not picking record after record as if it’s your birthday…
Is there any Youtube video of a notorious set with the so-called Mancuso style? Really curious right now!
I don’t think so. I’ve just read that he didn’t mix records. He was a selector.
Indeed. He did have two decks though as far as I know.
Better to listen to than watch.

When I ‘mix’ now, it’s more Mancuso style. I care less and less about beat-matching, etc. Rarely even touch the pitch fader
Thankfully, I only play to myself and the dog these days, so I can self indulge to my hearts content.
