Gimme More MAW

Not sure but Junior O was a resident at Chill Factor at Vinyl/Shelter, which was put on by my big brother and his crew and I can tell you that Doc, Merritt, and Junior were WAY serious party rockers. Ditto Ted Smooth and a bunch of other Latin dj’s who just never got burn outside of that world.

Nice. I pulled out the Supa-Dope Classics comp recently for the first time in years, it has another nice version of I Can’t Get No Sleep

Wicked tune. Phylyps Trak definitely shook up New York house a bit

Easily one of the best on strictly.

I remember sorta hoping the nujazz sound would go a bit more in this direction at the turn of the century.

Considering how much this was played by literally everyone, it is hard to believe it from 1991. I would have loved to have heard this dropped at the time.

Another unavoidable record around the area @bellio and i grew up.

Before he found semi fame as a renowned collector selector, i used to dj with a chap who would use this to get the dancefloor moving at some of the techno parties we’d play at.

Never heard that, just ordered a copy on discogs. Cheers.

I genuinely think this might be the first of it’s kind, i have tried to find something that has this style that we would later call an “AV8 Style” or “Party Break” but it seems like the earliest examples i could find were from 1992, when AV8 started up.

We should do a thread of the best of them, there were some tracks in this style, that when played in the correct context, really did open up a hip hop set nicely.

I’m sure you’re right and it definitely deserves it’s own thread.

I mean there’d been Steinski and Coldcut doing their thing mid-to-late 80s, that sample heavy instrumental hip-hop, but this seemed like a move on from that.

I guess most of what we’re talking about was out of NYC/East Coast around the mid-90s?

AV8 Records, Frankie Cutlass, Nubian Crackers, Wreck Records, etc.

Yeah, i would call the Steinski/Cold Cut/Latin Rascals stuff more like Cut & Paste, you wouldn’t really be able to slot it into a 90s boom bap type set so smoothly.

Yeah, that AV8/Cutlass/Nubian Crackers/Wreck Records is the stuff, there’s a few bits from the uk as well, but big beat soon extinguished that sound it seems.

It’s maybe a little dry on it’s own, but as dj tools they were pretty vital i found.

1000% mad racket was the birth of this style. There were a couple really horrifying years where the innumerable Flex-Clones would play an hour plus of AV8. I used to have dreams where Fatman Scoop was SCREAMING at me.

I believe it’s a RBMA video where somebody confuses Vega for Lil’ Louis and they joke about Lou Bega.

Still love this!

Not a bad track on this thread so far, so many classics. I came to them a bit late via the BBE 10th anniversary compilations so missed out on so many possible purchases but this has always been a favourite.

I could have put this in the mixes I keep coming back to thread but this has really been a fave for the last 20 years, particularly the Kenny part. I can’t remember recording this and have never been able to track down a full version as I think I’m missing about half an hour. If anyone does have a link to a full version let me know.

MAW One World radio 1 (2000)

This thread will probably never end as there is so much amazing music they did (plenty of duds too but let’s not go there) but here are my contributions.

Two of those mega sized remixes, they managed to stretch these to over 10 minutes and make it feel like 4. They were the masters of that.
