My mum said the same thing eons ago when my dad brought home an adorable puppy. She was not wrong although in those days i have fond memories of the streets and parks littered with 
Just be careful with a boozy Sunday lunch - that’s how my kids got me. They waited till a moment of weakness when I was full of roast chicken and red wine and I relented.
But that saying about “the one who wants him least, loves him most”, is true
