Curveballs deep in the dance

When it was posted that Michael Cook played this version of Why deep in the dance it got me thinking about other odd shapes that have worked.

Records like:

Bring The Wine (Idjut boys play this one)

or this one I used to end a lot of sets with back in the 2000’s - Light & Day / Reach For The Sun

Any others?

I should have clarified, it was a chilled out breakfast set aimed squarely at people monged out on haystacks but still a good idea for a thread :slightly_smiling_face:

Always remember Steve KIW playing Elgar at some Brighton disco boozer which took some balls. Harvey playing Saxon is another that springs to mind at his London comeback.

Mine was at BBQ’s/afternoon shindigs in deepest, darkest Chorlton, so not a million miles from where Michael played it. Another reason why I am bringing this up is I was invited to play somewhere today at this venue on the river in Cambridge here in Mass. and when I got there the DJ before me was playing the most po-faced dull tech house imaginable and it was like the fun police had arrived and declared dull was the theme of the day, so hearing songs like this is the much-needed mental bath I need.

I’ve probably mentioned this before, and yes, it’s the Idjuts again. After Krust’s apocalyptic set at Bestival’s Bollywood tent, they opened with this.

Thanks. I now know what the Idjuts played at Rotation. They also use ‘welcome to the jungle’ which I’m not as keen on, in that context.

Harvey playing ‘wish you were here’ in full. Mentioned before but Laurent Garnier playing Edwin Star ‘War’ as a statement

Theo playing Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit followed by this

That was at The Chair, right?

Well, that’s a (not really) controversial question.. that’s the one Mr Una mentions in various interviews.

But that’s not the night I heard Garnier play it. There was probably other clubs he was playing at same time I’d guess?

Optimo are masters of the curveball. So many moments, most of which are lost in the midst of time but its not hard to conjure a picture of Keith enthusiastically bouncing up and down while seamlessly seguing together reggae and a techno banger

I do remember them dropping this though to cause absolute carnage at some festival or other a few years before they helped set up its reissue on Sevla Discos

he was doing it back in the Pure days too - black sabbath - paranoid being a particularly effective method to clear the dance!

Bangalter dropping this after a load of banging, Chicago ghetto house tackle on the Daft Punk Essential Mix in '97.

Which saxon track did he play?

The Chain is another example.

Ali Cooke used to play The Cult, She Sells Sanctuary on occasion.

This thread could be a long Harvey list. I remember him playing this at Sunday Best at Tearooms des Artistes a long time ago:

And at WMC in 2010 or 2011 he played on the Sunday night in a club in a posh hotel on south beach. 4am came around far too quickly but he rounded it off in fine style – stopping the music, shouting out “this is the best record ever in the whole wide world” and playing the full 10 minutes of L.O.V.E. by Demis Roussos before closing out with a Dambusters-style Geoff Love-type tune. I heard them play this at a Ransom Note night in Hackney and it sounded incredible.

I always thought this was a weird one. Theo playing a string piece into a prog track both by Soft Machine 4.5 hours into a 5 hour set (this is part 3 of that recording; the track comes in about 44 minutes into the below clip).
