A thread for the appreciation of the roasted bean.
I’m currently very much enjoying using the OXO Rapid Brewer after being staunch Aeropress for years (and American style filter at weekends).
The OXO Rapid Brewer I modify slightly by using a puck screen on top of a filter paper and a smoothie shaker spring on top of that to help stop the water from lifting the top of the puck away. And than slap chop the fuck out of the plunger as fast as possible for a super quick extraction. Approx 22g of beans gives a good ‘shot’ they call ‘soup’ (kids these days ) and diluted for two. Delish.
I actually gave up all caffeine for three years due to bad GERD/Reflux issues (mainly drinking three strong black filters every morning on an empty stomach). You don’t actually realise how much caffeine affects your sleep quality until you don’t have it, but alas the addiction came back. Ah well.
Currently favouring a local shop/roastery called Tepuy. Columbian or nothing for me!
Cheers! I’m a chemex guy myself, but have resorted to cheap machine drip since the kids were born a year ago. My favorite lazy coffee is an overnight cold brew soak for a quick glass in the morning. I’m with you on Colombian or any single origin South American bean. Preferred over African beans which to me seem too fussy.
Massive coffee nerd, in fact started a roasting business with some mates about 15 years ago. Still going but I’m no longer involved, long story, short story never go into business with mates.
Living in the sticks necessitated buying something to make our own coffee, just replaced our first workhorse with a new german machine. Quite a ‘traditional coffee’ taste lover, nice Brazilian for me, none of that flowery fruity stuff although Mrs loves it. Makes for a lot of faffing changing grind settings in the morning.
After watching every season of Northern Exposure my youngest insisted we get a drip coffee machine and those brown mugs you get in the US.
So that’s what we use now.
I’ve been roasting daily for a decade as a hobby. I usually have a dozen or so varieties on hand and really try to taste everything. Lately I gravitate to natural process, roasted somewhere around city or city+. I use a late 70’s West Bend Poppery popcorn popper modified for coffee roasting.
My girlfriend also has a roasting business in our home using an Ambex YM-2 and her mother has been in the business for decades. We generally use a Chemex or french press. For a grinder I have a Baratza Virtuoso+ which is great.
I used a Moka pot for years until I let it melt. Has anyone here tried the Brikka? I’ve been thinking of ordering one.
Sipping a medium roast Chiapas washed and listening to this right now
Delonghi dedica for us which I’m pretty sure was a recommendation from another thread on here.
We’ve also got a delonghi grinder but looking to upgrade to one that puts the right amount of ground coffee into the basket thing rather than spooning it in with a teaspoon
Normally use a moka pot. a friend gifted us this old delonghi and I was able to pull some half decent shots but it stopped working so back to old trusted moka. Looking to get a sage bambino plus next month tho.
Recently got an aeropress, which i find gives alot better results than a cafetiere, would love a good machine tho, have used a cpl of delongi ones before and never thought they made a coffee worthy of the cost. Though those were the all in one thingys, not the espresso type posted above .
Welcome some recommendations for a machine that can make a coffee shop grade espresso under 500 quid.
Beanwise, we’ve a monthly subscription to a roasting company here in Belfast, they rotate monthly with small batch producers and I enjoy the variety , tho I also supplement with a standby Colombian which I enjoy best in the mornings!
Yeah Aeropress inverted method was my go to for probably last 15 years. Mrs J_C had it explode all over the top of her thigh and hand a while back, really bad burns. So I looked into similar brewers and found the OXO Rapid Brewer.
I still take the Travel Aeropress camping and whatnot though.
I’ve got a similar budget to that and was looking at the Gaggia classic (around £500). But I need to upgrade my grinder so will probably get a cheaper machine and set some budget towards a better grinder.
Been using an aeropress for the last few years. Got myself a K6 hand grinder at the start of the year and that’s improved things. Use the aeropress at work and it’s saved me a few £ from buying a daily coffee.
We’d like a coffee machine for the house. My wife wants a bean to cup machine that’s simple and gives her a decent coffee. I’m after something I can play round with and tweek things. I’ve been checking reviews on https://coffeeblog.co.uk/ and watching various YouTube videos trying to reach a compromise. Still haven’t found it.
If you drink any espresso based drinks your grinder will be the most important part of your setup, will have much more of an impact than a ‘better’ machine. So yes diverting cash to the grinder is a good idea.
Initially wanted a Profitec go but factoring in the additional cost of a decent grinder I’ll prob go for a sage bambino for now to get me started. The Profitecs look like lovely machines. One day…
