Yes, I played the Open Decks in his shop one day. Had a really good chat with him.
Bought this sweater from 1 of 100 last week, 23rd Precinct was a long standing Glasgow record store and a place where I spent most of my Saturday afternoons as a teenager.
I bought my copy of Little Fluffy Clouds there. Very fond memories.
I had my first record buying experience in there as a very green 16 year old who’d just got his first set of turntables.
I had zero idea how record shops worked. I had this list of tracks that I’d probably found in the reviews section of M8 Magazine!
I had been building up to what I thought was gonna be the coolest experience of my life.
Got in there with my wee list and as soon as I opened the door, I was instantly aware that everyone inside was infinitely cooler than me.
I approached the counter with the list grasped in my fist. Handed it to the surly staff member who basically looked at it like I’d just handed him a piece of used toilet paper and shook his head at me before disappearing into the back of the shop.
1 minute later I was back out on the street with no records.
Yep! I was 18 when I was there for the first time - not a kick in the erse off your good self - going in to record shops was always daunting. But in there it seemed mui bedlamatic! The guys behind the counter standing on boxes of unopened records. And plenty of maddies floating about.
Did you find what you were after in Fopp? The Byres Rd one was a treasure trove of ever-changing tunes.
M8 Magazine another blast from the past!
23rd could be quite intimidating, I always used to try and go early on a Saturday to make sure I got served by a DJ called Kris Keegan who was a nice guy, who would recommend stuff and wasn’t aloof and surly like some of the others.
I used to always read it chugging round the underground! Loads of adverts for shops on Ashton Lane. Jeez - if only the rest of my memory worked as well. Blast from the past indeed.
I still have a load of them in the spare room. My wife thinks I’m an absolute oddball for hanging on to them.
Kris Keegan. He opened his own record shop on High Street I’m sure - Level One Records.
I went around the corner to a place called Ultimate Mix. It wasnt as cool as 23rd Precinct, but the staff were very friendly.
Nice! I don’t remember that one. I’m over in April and hoping to get a dander around. Really looking forward to it.
Yeah, I remember hearing that, must have been around early/mid 00’s. I don’t think I was ever in there. I’d made the move to CDJ’s around then and wasn’t buying vinyl at all.
Hahaha I was going to come here the other day and post exactly the same thing!
Just snagged a pair of the Timberland / Our Legacy collab these look great and the QPR is really nice…
