Best Music of 2025

I slipped into a bad habit last year. Despite regularly adding to my wishlist I neglected to go back to weed and/or buy tunes. As a result, the other day I excitedly thought I’d discovered a new (to me) track* only to realise it’s been in my wishlist for months.

So as a variation on the usual theme, here’s my Top 20 tunes and albums I wasn’t appreciating last year but could have been had I been more organizized. Selected this weekend from my Bandcamp wishlist and in no particular order:

Badbadnotgood - Found a Light (Beale Street)*

Giorgio Lopez - Sud des Îles

Kirk Degiorgio - Seven Minutes of Funk

Djrum - A Tune For Us

D.D. Mirage - Piranesi

Speakers Corner Quartet & Tirzah - This Is How We Walk On The Moon

Stella - Amour Propre

Joao de Pife - Garoto Do Pife

Greg Foat - 6 Days in Leysin

Saint Abdullah & Eomac - Close Your Eyes Okay Now Open Them

Poppeye - Be My Baby

Brittany Davis - Amid the Blackout of the Night

Mark Barrott, Norma Winstone & Leo Taylor - I Am The Sun, You Are The Moon

Cosmic Tones Research Trio - Cosmic Tones Research Trio

Hometown Girl - Lavender (NF)

Modha - River feat. Àbáse & Fanni Zahár

Transport - Message To You

J-Walk - Lovely Bijou Fantaisie

Sewell and The Gong - Patron Saint Of Elsewhere

Circling Sun - Orbits

There’s lots more but I’ll draw a line there. I’m sure most of the above were recommendations from you good folks so thanks to everyone for being so generous with the recommendations and generally being a top bunch of people. Here’s to more great music in 2026 and more collective resilience to the ongoing shitshow we’re living through.

Cheers

That Poppeye record is incredible. I’ve never heard it before but what an absolute belter. Vinyl is already $100+.

Yeah, it’s fantastic, isn’t it? Pretty sure I added it when it was released so could’ve picked up the vinyl. I snoozed and I loozed

Man, that Circling Sun album is a beauty, such a gorgeous, warm, spiritual sound.

I have enjoyed listening to the vast majority of selections in this thread. It’s really broadened my listening over the last 4-5 weeks. It did the same last year so that’s why I was keen to make the playlist of all your picks.

Some reflections - I was amazed last year how horizontal a lot of your listening tastes are, and it’s the same again - so much of the music, and indeed whole albums feel almost like soundscapes. Absolutely no criticism there, I appreciate all the art and craft of it.

No Eddie Chacon this year? You all loved him the year before.

Less jazz in the picks this year too.

So… I thought I’d share another playlist. Mostly jazz, some electronic, and bits of blues, funk, hip hop, and Latin. All released last year.

Can we port the Apple Music playlist to Spotify?

i use “tunemymusic” for this very purpose: Transfer Playlists Between Music Services | Tune My Music

i’d make you a spotify version, but i don’t have a spotify account. so, here’s an amazon music version! https://music.amazon.com/my/playlists/cbc1cedd-397e-4b55-9cc6-19ec748c6fb0

That’s cool. ^^ This one is my jazzy playlist of the year. I assumed the person who asked was after the big playlist of everyone’s picks from this thread that is further up the conversation.

Could that one be done too?
