Hope that this is welcome here – I’ve been describing Berghain in excruciating detail in a series of love letters because it’s unbelievable that there’s a party this good almost every weekend in Berlin. It’s really quite special, and worth your time if you enjoy dancing to house and/or techno music.
@Hierbas led us to your articles - they’re bang on the money - you captured the essence of it and I really enjoyed them - thank you. I’ve been there once and it was excellent. A very bizarre weekend when lots of people from Glasgow were playing so it felt like a Sub-Club away match. But in a good way. I kept expecting to hear German accents but they were west coast of Scotland. It threw me for a spin. Cocktail d’Amore in Neukölln holds a dear place in my heart too.
Never been but read your excellent articles after they were shared here
After being turned away from berghain - i really enjoyed reading your experiences! Looking forward to the book
Thoroughly enjoyed your article. Thank-you. Having never been, I feel like it’s the closest I’ll get. Keep doing what you do!
I’ve always fancied paying it a visit, particularly Panoramabar, and I am going to Berlin in June. I just cant see myself going through what seems essentially like a lottery to gain entry. Especially when there’s so much other cool stuff going on in Berlin anyway.
Been maybe 5 times and only been turned away a couple of times. The last time was after a two hour queue in the snow in minus temperatures. Not fun. @sexydiscoballs article really does capture what the experience is like. I never found the fabled dark rooms, despite several attempts in various states of inebriation. There are plenty of nooks and crannies though where you can see all sorts of things going on.
Tried twice with zero success…Tresor both times more than made up for it
I feel like the gamble may be worth it. They say lotteries are a tax on people who are bad at math. Here, your cost is queue time and perhaps personal dignity, making it mentally taxing and hard on the ego, but the rewards to those who win are so astounding that it seems worth 5x the cost.
I’ve been twice and gotten in both times, once in shorts and apparently because I was nice to a drag queen in the line whose heel broke Sven thought I was right for the club. You capture the utter debauchery inside in words I simply don’t have. You’re a fantastic writer. I also didn’t stay for as long as you did both times, I got in and stayed a paltry 8 hours and then left. It’s definitely a place where you can go with someone, start chatting to people and then catch up again with that friend 8 hours later and regale all sorts of tales on the way back to the hotel.
Thank you so much for the compliments. I’m doing my best to try to capture the essence of the dancefloors that I write about and fell so deeply in love with Berghain that my only goal was to capture its beauty as an experience. <3 I can’t wait to return.
the part with the BBQ/the pig just fired my imagination really, I’ve been there about three or four times in my life: I really prefer much smaller places, but in any case, you expressed yourself very well and made me read about something I usually ignore… and I live nearby
Your article is fantastic btw.
Seems like Legoland during the school holidays has a lot in common with Berghain then
Perhaps not quite as culturally rewarding though.
Full of dirty kids looking to snap their bricks together in a tight fit?
Haha. More the queues for the rides - seemingly never ending today. Managed to get in and out without too much trauma.
I’ve been once and got in, only because I was with someone who was playing there. No chance I’d have got in otherwise.
Panorama Bar is something else, such an amazing space and vibe. Especially during the day with the blinds being opened and closed.
Eurgh you’ve reminded me of my trip to Legoland last year.
I decided to be the one to tell the lady from the travelling community to stop vaping on the bus. She did not welcome my input.
It was going to escalate to having a punch up with a woman on the bus in front of my son and lots of families or…
I went for option B and had to back down/STFU (whilst wishing her a painful death)
TBH, the first time I ever went there I thought it was a place called Panorama Bar. I hadn’t realised there were different levels to it. I spent a very happy night regardless.
For the uninitiated (me) Panorama is like a 2nd room and just part of Berghain right?
It’s not a separate thing: can’t just go there separately?
- context is I have a mate who’s a total bullshitter and always claims to have been to places I’m sure he has’nt, but I generally can’t be arsed to call him out.
He’s also one of the 800 people who went to Shoom every week and holidays in Elevenerife…
