At what point are you too old to DJ?

Glasshoppers was on the same street, closer to the roundabout.

Ah right, was that the site of Kev’s House?

That’s it. It was Kev’s House for about a year then changed to Remix.

I have very good memories of Bournemouth but it was a very long time ago.

Feels like a hundred years!

Never went to Glasshoppers. It was either Kev’s/Remix or Madisons.

Glasshoppers(for me) was pre acid, so rare groove/funk/hip hop type stuff. We used to have a Saturday afternoon hip hop jam at Madison in the mid 80’s. I knew Kev from school, I went a couple of times, but was travelling a lot then.

Did you happen to go to the Schooly D gig, 86 or 87? I’m sure I went to a early house alldayer where Daryll Pandy performed too.

Yes to both of those

Oh wow! Can you remember the venues? Were they at the same venue?

love that photo

men in their 40s writing earnest reviews of teen pop like Taylor Swift gives off a more creepy vibe to me, ngl. one has to ask what someone at that age gets out of that kind of music. I can understand early 20s but… after that shrugs … seriously just grow up.

But then again the white devil popcultists have never had self-respect have they now?

I think Daryll Pandy was in the show bar maybe on a bank holiday all dayer. I don’t think Schooly D was at the same doo. I’m thinking maybe somewhere like Academy but It’s very foggy.

Very foggy! It’s been bugging me for years.

I’m 54 and still going strong 5 nights a week!

While I generally try and avoid RA because of the overabundance of clickbait, I saw this article about Carl Cox (60 years old) and thought of this thread. Pretty good read…

At 53 I think I’m ready to hang up the Shure cartridges for good. I don’t get the thrill any more and it feels like Sydney just isn’t open to eclectic sets where they don’t know exactly what to expect. I imagine in the UK and Europe it is a lot different, but here just feels like unless you specialise in a certain genre, you don’t get the respect you’ve earned. I still love presenting weekly radio, which serves my varied tastes very nicely, but I’ll leave the live gigs for the specialists and youngsters.

PS - not looking for sympathy at all! It’s just how it is.

djing in any sort of business nightclub capacity is over for me. if i dig deep i could probably do an old gay tea dance again, but playing any sort of “new bangers” game is out of the question - i just don’t feel that way for the schedule that requires. i could bang it out for 40 minutes maybe, but nobody wants to watch my grizzled, unshapely self do that anymore - let the hungrier, prettier folks do that.

which is the way it should be. my peak time hours have passed and i’m absolutely made for the late night radio time slot or the long form mixcloud one-time listeners, and that’s absolutely fine with me. if it’s a real gig and i’m expected to go bigger than i’m used to, it takes a full ten days of prep otherwise i’m fully yawning and disinterested mid-set.

not that anyone’s asking. i’m offered like 3 gigs a year tops.

Yeah my recent live performance niche has been friends’ 50th birthdays.

Still love putting together my monthly show for loose.fm. Which is basically me compiling stuff I’ve listened to over the prior month. Even a small creative effort like that gives me huge enjoyment.
