Andrew Weatherall

I can’t think of it - vague memories of the clothes shop opposite which I think was some sort of outlet store. I remember thinking it was amazing in the late 80s!

I think Funky Mule was Friday nights. Saturday nights was initially a guy called Alan King then Boggy etc playing more Balearic and disco stuff. All my best nights at Basics were spent upstairs!

First time I ever heard the Una Bombers was there - 1995 ish at a guess. That room was great

Check this out! AW’s Slow Electric Vol.1: Massive Mellow Mix, has been painstakingly recreated by a fan, a labour of love that took him 3 years to complete.

This is fantastic work. The sort of deep dive the internet should be made for…

Fab find! Thanks for sharing.

Here all day for this kind of thing…

There was a remix LP that never saw the light of day too. We (Soft Rocks) did one for it. Pretty gutting at the time

How does that work Piers? Are you then forbidden from ever playing the tune that you made in one of your own sets? And the remix is lost for ever?
I think there was a remix that Andrew did for Primal Scream that also got scuppered and sank, never to be heard again.

You know the annoying thing about the lost primal scream remix is I had it on cassette and I can’t find that thing for love nor money. It went on for about 20 minutes and was genius. God knows where it went… My mate Dean may have it somewhere…

It’s taken on a life of its own for sure!

Andrew was pretty clear on not wanting any of the stuff to see the light of day, so we’ve kept it under wraps.

Fair enough Piers. If Andrew didn’t want it out there then you can respect that decision.

In the case of the Primal Scream remix, it sounded like it was the thought of Sony lawyers hounding him that was the major fly in the ointment. But who knows.

juuuuust to confirm my suspicion, are we talking about the PS remix of u p - t o w n?

I don’t know what the track is. I just remember it being a remix that Andrew had done for PS that didn’t see the light of day. When someone asked Andrew if he would play it, he declined, saying that playing it would result in Sony lawyers chasing him to the ends of the earth (or something similar).

It can’t be uptown as that was licensed to his masterpiece LP on the ministry label and was sold at primal scream gigs as a white label 300 pressed. Also came out on cosmo’s Balearic breakfast compilation not long ago. The white is still fairly easy to get. Think there’s one on eBay now.

yep, fair enough. the white was slightly cloak & dagger at the time, wouldn’t think that any sony lawyer would still care enough to break into a gallop over that one. but you never know!

I’ve phoned a friend on this one, and am waiting for a reply . But it sounds like Dean is the person who can settle this one definitively.
