What’s good? Here for a few days and keen to go to some spots that aren’t Rush Hour for a change (of course will still be calling in to RH).
Red Light Records
Waxwell Records is a good visit, picked up some excellent soul 7”s in there once and the owner is a lovely chap.
Zap Records is well worth checking out as well, loads of great disco and early house 12”s, however I seem to remember their opening hours can be a bit all over the place, tried visiting on a few occasions the last time I was there (4 years ago) and they were closed each time. Might have changed since then though.
Other than those two, and the obvious ones (RH and Red Light), I was quite disappointed by the others I checked out. Most seem to price their stock at the very top end of ‘cogs prices.
@Mandarina has just been recently
Would recommend getting out into some of the smaller cities nearby. Leiden is 30 mins on the train with loads of shops. Like a mini Dam, without the sleaze. Good shops in the Hague too
Top Tips for a beer are
Arendsnest on Singel ( 5 min west Dam Sq) - 50 dutch beer on draught
De Wildman ( central) twinned with Nottinghams Lincolnshire Poacher
Cafe Belguiqe
Got a couple of hours max in Amsterdam on Friday - any tips on spots other than Red Light? Basements, cheap digs, markets particularly welcome!
Haven’t been for years but I remember Record Mania being pretty good, and Waxwell as mentioned above.
As soon as you arrive take the intercity direct train to Rotterdam (40 min)
IMHO the most beautiful city in Europe with the biggest port, skyline etc. The record shops to go are Clone Records, De Oorzaak (those two are almost next to each other) and Demonfuzz Records and Plaatboef at De Nieuwe Binnenweg. Have a nice trip!
Never been in Rotterdam but I’ve heard nice words about Offbeat Records
But few hours in Amsterdam won’t take you to Rotterdam for sure ![]()
The only good thing about Amsterdam is the train to Rotterdam…
I’ve also heard great things about Rotterdam.
This is very off topic, but my wife bought me a biography of Rembrandt for Christmas, and ever since I’ve fantasised about a proper Dutch trip taking in Leiden, Delft etc. I’ve been to Amsterdam (and Nordwijk for a conference) but never travelled around.
Rush Hour is the obvious one
If you fancy a beer nearby Arendsnest is great
Zap was good when I had a browse

Sadly didn’t have time to go to any in the end but did get a few from the flea market … ![]()
Have been a couple of times over the years and was always amazed by how much it keeps developing. It’s a great city.
