I thought I’d start a thread for people to post what is some of my favourite music: 80s RnB. I’m talking that Loose Ends, Jam & Lewis style boogie-funk disco type RnB. I hope I’m not alone here. To get things rolling, here’s some of my favourites:
Weirdly, my love for this genre feels a bit like a guilty pleasure. I think this is because nearly all of my “house and techno friends” don’t get it at all and I feel like I have to keep it secret from them. I think for them it’s all “too slow” and “too soulful”.
I think I’ve come to a lot of these originals through more recent re-edits, which often remove the vocals.
So this first one is the basis for the tracky Runnin Pizza EP1 by Grooveman Spot, which I also love. But this OG is killer.
My second submission was beautifully re-edited by The Drunk.
Not sure if this is 80s RnB or Modern Soul though. What’s the difference exactly?
Finally another one that I found through an edit (I can’t remember which one though).
EDIT: I remembered the edit - it’s called Rue 52 by Project Tempo
For all the people that don’t get it, there’s so many of us that just get completely lost dancing to it.
Moodynann - big fan of curious!
Reel away! That “Feels so Real” is top shelf.
Here’s one that was maybe a bit obvious/popular in some parts of the world but didn’t get much play down under:
Excellent - so here are some more…
I’ll go with a classic, first. Justifiably huge, with a huge bassline:
And one that I heard someone play recently at a wedding - couldn’t believe the young folk were getting down to this!
Can’t go wrong with a deep bassline and heartache vocals
Which then fed massively into the crossover success of bands like Soul II Soul and Massive Attack (in the UK at least).
this is KILLER!
Isn’t it?!
And at this wedding there were loads of 30-somethings happily dancing to it. I couldn’t believe it!
