3 not too hard to find records that are essential

Lists are tough but I love how they focus you -

MFM 002 - never get tired of this

If I had to choose one classical record–quite available and a reference recording

How could I not? Ben Chapman remix cheap as chips

3 uncool jazz sureshots for Thursday-

A comp, a mediocre pressing, a GUARANTEED smile on your face.

Even more galling to the purist, this is a Time Life box set that you could order through be mail but Peewee is like the first Eric Dolphy or some such bs and this record is a good time and makes children and old people smile. Maximum value and maximum offense to rare record snob dudes.

A repress, two old guys, who revisionist edgy freaky jazz snobs aren’t brave enough to admire openly OR two of the most important artists of all time kicking ass together? The answer is obvious if you have ears and a heart.

Coming Back on Strobe is gorgeous as well.

I’ll come back with a third later…
But due to the fact that these two electro (pop) bombs were reissued endlessly they’re cheap as the proverbial

I’lll raise you one @Apiento and go with Joni’s “Shadows and Light” which came out on a 2xLP as well as a concert film. Why? Because it features one of the greatest bands of all time with Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker, Don Alias, Joni herself at her absolute prime, and the Persuasions to give it some special folksy kick. This is a serious serious record and not so many people talk about it:

#2 on my list if Delaney & Bonnie’s “Home” their first record on Stax with the MG’s as backing band, and compositions by Stax heavy hitters. This is a major smile on your face soul music album, guaranteed to make you happy.

and #3 is Count Basie & The Kansas City 7 on Impulse! records. This record, like a lot of the records by old time jazz musicians on Impulse was impeccably recorded and featured these legends playing music on what was at the time the edgiest big Jazz label. It’s great to hear Basie with a small-ish band and so well recorded too:

Classic 89 New York house from Cliff Saint-Cyr, with a couple of wicked Morales mixes…have heard a few people play this recently, surprised the prices haven’t gone daft

THE perfect pop album, Paddy McAloon genius songwriting and produced by Thomas Dolby. If you’re lucky still lurking in a charity shop near you!

Bona fide Balearic classic…still relatively easy to get hold of

Bluejean’s Regime – Untrue Affection

Seems to be a load more of these out there than a couple of years back, for reasonable prices. The Maharajah Mix is the one for me (called the Dark Club mix on the UK release). Brilliant, raw, vocal house.

Cobra - Flex (Version)

Lovely mellow dancehall version, for a couple of quid.

Loose Ends - Emergency (Dial 999) (Dub Mix)

I’m going to use McDan77’s description of this from Discogs, as he sums it up very well: “Such a wicked dancefloor dub mix. Plus all the trimmings you could hope for: police siren noises, strong rhythm track, and that cool vocal refrain (“why dontcha, why dontcha???”). Stupidly cheap for such a good record.”

Love Bluejean, great name too.

That Cobra track was on a comp by David Toop I think. So good.

Love “Shadows & Light” so much, always preferred it in a way to “Hissing of Summer Lawns” (which has to be one of the greatest album titles ever) due to the band as you wrote and the general feeling. I think Balearic Mike used “Dreamland” in an Alphonsus mix but maybe I’m conflating…

That first one is absolute magic. Love the attitude in it.

That 12" by Marvin Gaye is in every record store in the US. Small, big or tucked in the back you will find it. Must have sold an absolute shitload of those.

on my buy list for years, just picked one up for like $2, so yep - essential and cheap!

Not breaking many boundaries here, but this is what I just put on this evening, digging out some 90s stuff and liked all of them enough to post here.

  1. Family Stand - Ghetto Heaven (Official Music Video) Remastered @Videos80s - YouTube

  2. Omar - I Don't Mind The Waiting - YouTube
B side of There’s Nothing Like This.

  3. Junior giscombe step off - YouTube
The dub on the 12 is probably what you want, but I can’t find a link.

Anyway, all readily available if you want to plough that early 90s furrow.

Nothing fancy or groundbreaking but 3 that are for me essential.

You can pick any version of Welcome to the Pleasuredome that you like they are all solid as far as I’m concerned.

Dubnobass is an album that has given me many many hours of pleasure and is definitely my desert island choice. I can vividly remember the day it was released, one of those albums that evokes time and place for me, and one of the few that I own multiple copies of. I am still amazed that I can find more in it as time goes. on.

Including this one as it’s still around to get purchase. This is an album you can live inside and put on like a nice warm bath. I only listened to it after a mention on this forum and was transfixed for 40 minutes. A future classic, get it while you can
