The Rest Is History is brilliant, the recent 5 parter on the turmoil that was 1968 in the USA (RFK, LBJ,MLK, Richard Nixon, George Wallace, the Black Panthers, Yippies and many more)was a wonderful listen. Wish my old history teachers were as good as Dominic Sandbrook and Tom Holland.

Not bought any new music this year, but seen a lot of movies and read a lot of books.

Top 3 films in no order (felt like a really strong 2024 in the cinema).

Zone Of Interest
All Of Us Strangers
Past Lives

Top 3 Books I’ve Read

Too Much Too Young, the 2 Tone story
Remain In Love by Chris Frantz
Hope And Glory, Rugby League in Thatcher’s Britain

Trying to come up with a top 5 charity shop, second hand record shop, list.

Great list, but I reckon you need a new one for films, as Past Lives was 2023

Just realised got three months free with new Mac, there’s my Christmas cooking playlist sorted, gracias!

Dominic Sandbrook makes me laugh every time he’s reading one of the ads on the Rest History podcast. To me, it sounds like he’s thinking “I can’t believe I have to read this shit”

I saw it on New Year’s Day 2024, so makes my list (point taken though).

I’ll swap it for Soundtrack To A Coup D’Tat in that case.

i’m terrible at end-of-year lists, they always feel like homework and i was a terrible student. i think i live my life in snapshots, and am pretty terrible at turning them into digests.

but i greatly appreciate this thread, and i will pore through it and probably spend hundreds of dollars to get all this great stuff that passed me by.

a few highlights:

cowboy sadness “selected jambient works” LP
gaussian curve “winter sun/fever dream” 12"
greg foat “live at can rudalya, ibiza” LP
fabiana palladino “fabianoa palladino” LP
world standard “country gazette” LP reissue
lars bartkuhn “nomad” LP
a song for you “home” LP
hame “almost home” LP
mudd “in the garden of mindfulness” LP
steve cobby “fuck no” LP
total blue “total blue” LP
greg foat “the glass frog” LP
mark barrott “everything changes, nothing ends” LP
V/A “sitting in trees” compilation
chuck johnson “sun glories” LP
T3AL “bluish green” EP
puli “swirling” LP
four tet “three +” LP

and that’s just off the top of my head. there’s been so many good records to find and buy and there’s been so many more fun things to discover that absolutely didn’t come out in 2024.

all the other stuff, i don’t know - i don’t think i watched a single “new” movie this year, television sucked and all i did was watch basketball, cooking shows, or auto auctions. walked the dog a lot. continued to hold down a job. had a couple of magical moments that were extremely pacific NW, but you don’t want to hear about those.

tonight, we’ll eat christmas tamales and watch “it’s a wonderful life” (my wife swears she’s never seen it - she’ll appreciate that’s it’s hella anti-capitalist) and feel like a nice lil’ family and feel grateful we’re not out in the cold and rain, and that we have time, space and money to enjoy some quiet moments.

it’s the most time of the year. i love it, but it should come like the olympics (every four years).

The Titanic Rest Is History was good too, may have audibly groaned when I saw that was the subject matter thinking how much more can be said. But fascinating and put into the context of the times too.

Nothing particularly deep or experimental that floated my boat this year. Maybe it’s the post-pandemic effect, maybe I’m getting old or maybe I got too distracted with breakbeat stuff. Anyway - 3 lists….

Just checked out both of these, v nice!!

Klangkollektor - Dub Tapes Volume 1 (Before I Die)
Fracture - SLOW860 (Astrophonica)

Really enjoying this album by RIP Swirl which I found via a ddwy pick in the TP website review of the year.

Has some a.s.o. trip hop vibes but a fuller indie sound overall.
