My son accidentally took the wrong leavers hoodie home from the leavers disco and my wife got a message in the parents group chat from a distressed parent saying

‘can you please ask him not to damage it’

Thank god you sent that message, he was just heading upstairs to wipe his arse with it.

You know what disappoints me about this kind of thing, is that it can drive you away from being curious/friendly/available/open to new people. It’s very easy to meet a string of troubled people in a row and just close up shop.

I had a similar situation, went to a gig my drummer mate was playing, very low-key Sunday night, not much happening at all, all the sensible 9-5 people tucked safely into their homes. Cute woman shows up in the venue, nice haircut… there’s so few of us there it’s almost impossible not to end up in a chat, couple of drinks later and bit of a hookup ensues. Medium story short, met up with her again on a nice sunny lunchtime in a park for a catch-up at some later juncture. It’s midday-ish, she is blind, three-sheets, slurring. Turns out she is dealing with major alcohol issues due to a bunch of significant trauma she’s working through, but y’know, as ‘in the grip’ as anyone you’ve ever met. I’d been a bit sick myself with some odd health issues, was trying to live healthy, absolutely no capacity in my life to spend time in the company of heavy drinkers, had to extricate and eventually block phone and social contacts. 5 years of emails ensued from her, all hours of the day and night. Sweet baby Jesus that’s a long time.

I think I was fortunate that I had to move flats shortly after I blocked her, that apartment was well accessible from the street.

Yeah, I have to agree. Apart from some of the early stuff, Logical Progression etc, it does pretty much nothing for me…

Partial to the odd record here and there but can’t fathom the devotees who go to an entire night of it.

Job adverts with no salary listed. It should actually be made law this has to be included.

2000 words on the company, their values, benefits, what they want from you but no mention of the most important thing.

Complete waste of everyone’s time.

It’s law in some states here in the US and the knock on effect is that when we post new jobs people who have the same job realize how underpaid they’ve been.

The murderous Don King’s truest lines sadly.

Our internal jobs site is exactly the same.

A group of us spent the day in Massachusetts Superior Court, and just successfully argued a case against the federal government and received a preliminary injunction while the case continues. Essentially saving a lot of jobs as we can carry on with business as usual. My overlord in Zurich however is “disappointed you weren’t able to get the case the thrown out entirely”. Sigh.

I am of the opinion that all business people are just natures mistakes. My politics now are more left/anarcho than they have ever been. And for the first time in my life I am pretty vocal about it, especially when it comes to employees rights and employer exploitation. Fuck them, some people are just vampires.

Many decades ago I worked for a well known UK high street record retailer. Most of us who worked there were in our late teens, thought we were oh so cool  and one day it turned out the whole chain had been sold to WH Smith … not so cool.

A few years later I was at a gig with some former colleagues and bumped into the owner who’d sold the company off. We got into a conversation about how he could have possibly sold out, betrayed our youthful commitment and enthusiasm. His answer was a crucial life lesson at 19 and has stayed with me ever since. Totally without any emotion he turned round and said “there’s no room for sentiment in business”. Commitment and enthusiasm is there to be exploited. Making money is the only thing these people understand. Fuckers.

I had principles until getting laid off. Overnight went from opposing airport expansions to applying for jobs at airports. You do find yourself wondering if you really stand for anything

HMV, Virgin, Our Price etc definitely exploited the enthusiasm of their staff. If you were going to be working in retail then they were definitely the better option. I spent far too long working for Virgin (5 years!) in my early 20s. Did enjoy it for the most part though but it gets to a point where crap salary + working every weekend isnt the one.

I became a ‘business person’ two years ago. My business partner and I have political views that are very firmly on the left. I think you’re right, most business owner’s are exploitative but that’s given us a chance to pick up some of the best employees in region as we’re trying to work it differently. We have profit share, full pay and 4 day week, capped salaries (for us above our highest paid employee), lots of flexibility around working hours and full wfh plus fixed charitable donations etc etc.

I’m absolutely certain we could enrich ourselves significantly further but at what cost morally and ethically? I’d much rather be doing what we do on our terms rather than for a big corp as we were previously.

I am knee deep in the corporate world and our company’s founder has a rule that every year he needs to make a 5% “family profit” no matter what. So, since Orange Cheetoh came into power all industries have been hurting and our CEO is very much a yes man, so we have found ourselves cutting positions in the weeks leading to the financial close just to get to that 5% and not stopping to see what the impact is on the staff (overworked, because as you know when a role gets cut the responsibilities don’t magically disappear) and on the student experience (I am in education). It’s been pretty dreadful but the founder makes his 5%.

It’s enough for a lot of us to start getting our pitchforks ready.
