Thomas Dolby is a genius imo.
Back in '99 I was working for an early digital music download site. Those pre-iTunes days were pretty wild west with a variety of different approaches/ideas and even formats.
I saw Dolby give a talk at a conference about his audio technology company Beatnik and its unique âplayerâ. He was very interested in reducing file size and as far as I remember his player was actually a synthesizer and âmusic filesâ were actually instructions for it to reproduce the sounds at the users end thus a fraction of the size of mp3s.
Its USP was that the âplayerâ allowed you to switch on & off different parts of the track - drums, bass, etc and add effects - stems 20 years before stems!
He had licensed Bowieâs Fame and I think a Cyndi Lauper track - I had loads of fun buggering about with them and Hyperactive on my PC.
Unf I canât find any footage of the player/interface which was great and really intuitive, but you get the gist with this clunkier looking WebTV version.
When we lived in London Paul Gambaccini was without a doubt the celebrity we saw most often. Sometimes weâd see him twice in a weekend. Leave us alone, Paul!
Itâs true. Britain smells of weed and Garlic Sauce ![]()
