Scoop was a decent watch on Netflix
Old pervy Prince Andrew does not come out of it well. Proper wrong 'un
Just finished masters of the air. I enjoyed it, particularly the last 3 or 4 episodes. Strong coat game.
Back to Shogun now.
Shogun just went up about ten levels with that last episode. Genuinely epic. Loving it.
Can’t bear waiting until next week for more!
Had a blast with both parts of Dune last weekend. Also great on headphones.
Watched this slow burner in the very early hours. Beautiful soundtrack and sound deisgn. Wasn’t surprised when William Basinski’s name rolled past in the ending credits.
In her hypnotic documentary feature, Ethiopian-Mexican filmmaker Jessica Beshir explores the coexistence of everyday life and its mythical undercurrents. Though a deeply personal project—Beshir was forced to leave her hometown of Harar with her family as a teenager due to growing political strife—the film she returned to make about the city, its rural Oromo community of farmers, and the harvesting of the country’s most sought-after export (the euphoria-inducing khat plant) is neither a straightforward work of nostalgia nor an issue-oriented doc about a particular drug culture. Rather, she has constructed something dreamlike: a film that uses light, texture, and sound to illuminate the spiritual lives of people whose experiences often become fodder for ripped-from-the-headlines tales of migration.
The cinematography and acting in Ripley is great, not so sure about the plot. I realised it’s highly stylised/film noir homage, but things like “why would one rent a boat and use it for that purpose?!!”. Without giving spoilers, it just seemed a lot of improbable things happened purely to provide plot tools.
Still enjoyed it.
Yeah I do see your point. I finished it last night and absolutely loved it, didn’t want it to end. Nonetheless there was quite a weird tonal shift in the last episode and some characters seemed to change completely. Still wildly enjoyable and liked a certain cheeky little cameo.
I just don’t like Andrew Scott. He creeps me out for some reason
Anyone subbed in on the fallout TV series yet? Looks like a solid take on the game
Going in this weekend. I’m hearing good things.
Watched #1 last night, was really well done. Not really got going yet but nice it’s not too dumbded down. You wouldn’t know it was game based if that puts you off.
Well that might work quite well in this series!
Starting it this weekend
I put the Guardian review above, five stars! Going to watch the first one tonight with my Fallout-obsessed 14 yo
Agreed, I thought the last 3 episodes were particularly strong. Really good series. Perhaps not on par with Band Of Brothers but better than The Pacific.
Revisiting this slow burning beauty in 4K tonight.
Last night rewatched the extended version of Lynch’s Dune for the first time in a ten or so years. It hasn’t aged well but kinda dug the second half and it seemed to end where Part Two ends. Good to see lots of scenes from the Lynch version made it to the new versions. Pete and Big Ed from Twin Peaks represent. I think I appreciate the new versions more now… they were fucking epic.
Has anyone read the books? I’m curious about them now.
You’ll need a lot of patience. They have their own lexicon and “bible” essentially. It’s not to the level of Tolkien, but of “modern” literature, it’s close. The books are unadaptable in my opinion, which is why every attempt excises a great deal and offers up completely different interpretations of ideas, events, and characters.
Lynch got the most right, visually, in my opinion. That’s the gold standard as far as I’m concerned, forget about the narrative and the actual story beats he followed, the visual identity and visual story telling actively has not been done better.
Someone posted scans of the original magazine stories on twitter recently. I tried to read one but didn’t get far.
