What Are You Reading?

MoS doesn’t come out of it well in the comments… Tbf one of the best nights we had there was a Gilles Peterson midweek thing where it just sounded so good. Talking Heads played on that system was ace.

Saw a book the other day by Norman Finkelstein that apparently “dubunks” this book.

Not read either yet so can’t comment either way, just thought I’d mention it.

Gets a real pasting doesn’t it!

I thought it was great for the first couple of years, maybe less. A rawer space and getting to hear Humphries, MAW etc all night. Had forgotten about the cinema room!
Soon became a brand I guess then it was all fluffy bras and shiny shoes. Time to move on, but fun while it lasted.

I used to absolutely loved MOS. I know its divisive but when you were in the main room, man that sound system absolutely rocked. Remember going for the first time to Open and seeing Fabio Para’s Soundclash Republic doing his live thing & Harvey doing the grave yard slot. To be honest, I don’t think I knew who either were at the time :upside_down_face: but kept the flier so found out many years later. Had top nights there with Angel Moraes, Tenaglia, Francois K, Joe Claussell, Louie Vega etc.

The MOS/Open record label was also pretty impressive too.

I went to a few US housey things there mid 2000s when everyone seemed to be playing ‘bar y thym’ or ‘sandcastles’. Tight security getting in, fingers in your shoes… the last stand for my big club days

Heidi Lawden (Harveys manager and DJ) was one of the A&Rs at that label… I think she signed the FK EP from Wave.

I mean that EP along with remixes is amongst my favourite records. If I was really hard pushed, I’d probably choose Street Corner Symphony’s first record on Open as my fav ever track. Still get goose bumps listening to the Harvey mix.

No love lost between her and LC…

Sounds around about the same time as my last visit. Think it was a Faith doo, mud punch backstage and very messy.

Mid 90s for me, mates working in the offices and on flyer/label design so no drama getting in. Brilliant nights out.
And yeah that system rocked.

It’s just blown my mind to discover that it’s still open! For some reason I thought it closed down ten years ago. #fingeronthepulse

I can’t remember a time Vice wasn’t a trash heap. It had potential once, I take it?

I used to love it when it was in print

Yeah, it was great when it was a freebie mag eh? The larger photography editions were brilliant.

My studio monitors are sat on a piles 2005/6 mags.

Remember getting it at The Bean on Curtain Road, was a breath of fresh air when it came out.

I thought FACT was a great lil mag too, especially the early editions that had the 7" sleeve.
