I love a good book about death. Death is something we don’t do well, as a culture. Death, and dying has been forced into my consciousness through my new job and looking after my dying Dad. In the last year and a half, I’ve seen dead bodies, spent time with people in their last days/months. It has really changed my outlook on life.
Anyway, a couple of great books on death and dying;
Nothing to be Afraid of - Julian Barnes
Highly recommended. A beautiful, funny and poignant memoir.
All That Remains: A Life in Death - Sue Black
A compassionate, life-affirming memoir on the life of a forensic anthropologist.
Thanks, I’ll add those to the list and yes you’re absolutely right on that. I’ve been working on a few legacy and in-memory projects for charities and it’s helped me think about the conversations we have (and don’t).
My wife recommends Staring at the Sun by Irvin Yalom (psychotherapist) and my mind was really blown last year by Being Mortal by Atul Gawande (surgeon) - all about how to have a good end of life, which we should all care about.
333 is all pretty hazy now tbh. I was always out of it. remembering getting thrown out once when a pal was er indiscreet, so just carried on at herbal down the road. went a few times but could not recall who was playing ever. mostly early 2000s. remember that techy, sleazy Playhouse sound (early Get Physical too maybe?) and a certain vibe that went with it. loads of kooky/arty Europeans and perhaps the odd gangster or two
