What Are You Reading (Online Version)?

Yeah, sorry, the shipping is actually more than that. Sent one this morning to the US and was charged a bit over £26. UK shipping is £6.

Both these prices are what I’m quoted at The Post Office. Haven’t investigated other options although a VERY quick google a couple of days ago gave me similar rates for international.

Let me do some proper digging tomorrow. Will let you know what I find.

I’m in the UK is what I meant to say.

Ah, got it. Just checked and just did the same for me - assumed we’re in the US. I’ve obviously misconfigured something in squarespace  I’ll investigate. Again.

OK, this is a pretty common problem, apparently. Thanks for spotting it! I’ve just changed default shipping country to the UK. Should be OK now. Let me know if you have any problems.

Looking forward to the new No Way Back in 2026.

Finished this over the weekend, I think Irvine Welsh has probably gone as far as he can with these characters, really enjoyed reading the Begbie sections but reading the rest of the characters just felt like a drag (Sickboy in particular)

The last book in the Ray Lennox series was great though.

99.9% of this goes over my head, but thought this might be of interest to the more well-informed:

Glad to see turntable weights weren’t on the list! Comment section is funny- can tell a few of them have fallen for the market bs!

Oh, jeez, Squarespace is doing my head in. Although I’m sure it’s user error *eyeroll * (Mine, I mean!)

Thanks so much for the purchase. I’ll get that in the post this afternoon.

Just started reading Haunted Weather by David Toop, anyone else read this? Really interesting ideas about sound and what constitutes music, but done in a sort of travel memoir type style which is really enjoyable and not dry (so far).

Yes, I love this book! Reminds me I should re-read it.

Here’s a couple of excerpts that stuck out to me:

Kurosawa’s views on sound were very clear. ‘Ever since the silent film gave way to the talkie,’ he said, ‘sound has interfered with the image - and at the same time this flood of sound has become largely meaningless. That is why the director must be very careful - because a motion picture must be the most effective combination of both image and sound. Cinematic sound is never merely accompaniment, never merely what the sound machine caught while you took the scene. Real sound does not merely add to the image, it multiplies it.’

Extreme noise terror is a purifying balm, a rent in the fabric of the universe, a transgression against the forces of conservatism, corporeal denial and suppressed psychic energies. This is the received wisdom. But the truth is, playing brutally loud music is quite easy. Exhausting, perhaps, and disastrous for the ears in later life, but not in the same league of difficulty as playing really, really, really quietly. Playing on the threshold of silence can turn your body into a war zone of cramps and tremors, provoke clumsiness and mental panic, push your concentration, levels beyond all previous limits, expose every flaw of structure and execution and finally turn a docile audience into a howling mob.

just saw this book posted on facebook. Fucking hilarious - the ultimate gatekeepers have lost the keys and have been overrun…

the comments section is hilarious

“Is it subtitled ‘how I wish the scene to die with me’?”

“Clearly Northern Soul “ belongs” to some people …I didn’t know that . As a newcomer to the scene (1976) I apologise if I have hijacked anything …I think I may be guilty of sliding on my heels instead of my foresole and I believe I may have spun in the wrong direction once or twice…apologies for any distress his may have caused the owners and custodians .”
