It’s a NETGEAR ReadyNAS 2100 - It’s one my dad ‘liberated’ from work - so it’s probably massively over engineered for a few GB of music - took us ages to get it to connect to my Sonos but think that’s a Sonos issue more than anything.
I hear you, our Sonos now won’t recognise the NAS at all despite everything else being able to. Currently just streaming from SoundCloud. Major pita.
I know the feeling - at least 8 hours of my life i’ll never get back! I don’t know why it can’t be simpler.

Just worked out how to do this…
and it was really fucking easy
All my mp3s on a hard drive connected to my Mac
Installed “plex audio server “ (free) on the Mac
Pointed it at the hardrive
Connected all my devices (phones etc)
And my (old) smart tv had plex installed as an app so connected that as well… which plays through the stereo in the front room so i can play any/all mp3s anywhere in the house … and it was completely free
Had been looking at dedicated media servers but they don’t seem to be necessary… i just used my Mac mini.
Heres the link if anyone is interested.
Whole process took me about twenty minutes
And that including installing the app on all my devices !!
Server on the Mac only
“Player” on all other devices
You can disable all the tv / freeview bollocks and just use it as a dedicated music server (i have)
It supports up to 192k audio i think
Although you’d need one of these to take advantage of that i suppose
I think everyone else has already done this judging by comments about sonnos etc… But i hadn’t and I’m surprised how straightforward it was.
Heres a screenshot of the ios app
