UK Broadband

Its a 1g connection supposedly, will check it once installed

I’ve got one of their MESH repeater thingies, as live in an old property with really thick brick walls. It does help a bit, although WiFi upstairs is still quite patchy. I plug my WFH setup directly into it for best results.

Think I pay an extra £5 a month for it.

We’re in the second year of a deal with Virgin Media, they informed us that the monthly bill (for the 100MB package) was going to get jacked up from £32 to £55.
My wife, who’s way better at this stuff than me, spent about half an hour on the phone to them, refused to take no for an answer, very politely tore into them and secured their 150MB package for the original £32. Great for us, but why the hell should we go through this dance every year? Changing was of course an option, but the market for different speeds and packages looks like an absolute minefield. Always the risk we could end up with something worse than we have now in terms of speed, reliability and customer service for a few quid in savings.
Feels like there is something deeply wrong with this sector which is, pretty much, an essential utility now.

The basic infrastructure should be owned and maintained publicly imo. It’s an essential service and the UK is pretty poor in my experience compared with other European countries.

Absolutely. The problem is 90% of the infrastructure is owned by BT and they dont have any competitors. They are answerable only to OFCOM who seem incapable of keeping them in check. You wouldnt beleive some of the shit I’ve seen them pull on customers. Its criminal

I can only imagine.

Depends where you live, but I went for 5g mobile broadband router when I moved last year no landline BS and you can place the device anywhere, unlimited rates are cheap. Lots of carriers offer it but guess the margins are better on the ftc old school options.
