just got back from my first trip to toronto (work trip) and yep, it was pretty fuckin’ great.
on @Casual’s recommendation we ate at both chubbie’s jamaican (get the platter!) and daldongnae KBBQ. both were great. can also recommend campechano for excellent slightly-fancy tacos, and the seafood place in st. lawrence market. the whole market was awesome, i regretted i had but one appetite to satiate. there were so many excellent lookin’ foods to be sampled, so many amazing meals to be made.
my favorite find was a place my pal scoped out - issues magazine shop. i mourn the loss of magazines in our society but am totally here for the resurrection of high quality, keep-forever periodicals. this shop was lovely - i walked out with a few quality music reads (the new we jazz, a thing called heartbeat), catnip for my kid (who loves cats but has allergies), mildew for my ex (who loves repurposing vintage clothes) and even a couple of super-cheap design/photography annuals because there’s always great ideas in those. i wish we had a shop like this in seattle - i feel like i need a store like this to really discover the things i didn’t know i needed.
i did visit invisible city, but didn’t have enough time to give it the full dig it deserves. walked out with a few very reasonably priced items, could have probably scooped a lot more. had to catch my flight home, so i couldn’t check out sonic boom.
my pal is still there through monday, and going to do the whole sewing shop/fabric store/thrift shop crawl, and check out even more restaurants, museums, and spots. can’t wait to go back. i’d like to do maybe two weeks in that half of canada, maybe a week in montreal and another week in toronto.
