The Social Media Dilemma

took me ages to quit youtube, it was the hardest one, i still use it for specific technical info but only on computer not phone if i can help it, i still use discogs for music and listen to youtube clips there as well… but it really encourages endless ‘searching’ for exciting new content and it’s insiduous imho

I’ve deleted Instagram and have a timer on WhatsApp which makes me wait if I want to access outside of 2 specific windows. The only person who should need to contact me urgently is my wife and we now use iMessage.

Not sure how I’ll know what’s going on without Instagram - tickets for gigs and stuff?

The gigs/tickets thing is the main miss for me and the main reason I still have to log in at least once a week to see what’s happening.

Luckily I’m on a WhatsApp group with alot of like minded peeps here who ensure flyers, gig announcements and pre sale codes are posted for everyone’s benefit. Copped tickets this week for goat in Dublin with a shared presale, so it’s great

Binned Facebook 10 years ago - well, have an account I use for local market place and zero friends

Instagram was the thing that kept me scrolling so deleted that off my phone and iPad over a month ago and still off both devices. I probably login once a week on my laptop but I find on that device there’s so much less compulsion to randomly scroll, rather I look for accounts where I’d like to see what they are up to.

Have WhatsApp locked apart from two windows of time per day although I can break this as it sometimes causes issues

Still feel like i spend too much time on my phone though!

I am definitely fighting the phone time right now. I finished a book, a Weller biog - not bad, the other day which (sadly) felt like an achievement. So back into reading and it feels like music biogs are the win for now. Next up Ray Davies and a punk memoir.

Good that. Dancing through the Fire?

Ever read the one Paolo Hewitt wrote after their acrimonious falling out?! Unsurprisingly a different picture painted…

It was called My Ever Changing Moods and had such a grumpy picture of him on the sleeve I had to take it off heh… It was ok. Not read the Paulo Hewitt one but he seems a bit of a one… His book on Heavenly trying to be Absolute Beginners was pretty laugh out loud though fairplay to anyone that writes an actual book… Why did they fall out?

Allegedly because Weller didn’t invite him to the Brit awards when he received the lifetime achievement. The book is quite petty!

Oh wow… That’s a pretty sad reason does make me want to read it though.
