c’mon @Hierbas were you seriously not impressed when they opened the piece with an anecdote about Kylie Minogue singing with Swedish House Mafia? 😉 PS I agree. A total missed opportunity. A total deepdive into Pacha, from its Sitges early days to the closures of the hotels, would be interesting. ---

Tbh I tend to swerve all ibiza mythology now. It’s a short step from iconic to disneyland and the cash-in is relentless. I don’t want to see puff pieces feeding the beast. It’s getting harder but there’s still ways to avoid it, the likes of malanga for music, restaurants like san juan in old town, pockets of formentera, sant joan, sant jordi… Swerving the monster. The problem is we’re all guilty, louts, hippies, yuppies, estate agents and beards alike. DJ Dribbler wrote a savage but not inaccurate (now deleted) tweet at the weekend moaning about people spending 72hrs on the island and then turning into self-proclaimed experts all year around, treating locals like theme park characters in some fantasyland. I think that creates a lot of tension. We all claimed ownership of Eden, but that’s the thing… for me, living in mainland spain and getting a different angle you just gradually realise this is 40 years of wholescale colonisation which yes a few greedy spanish acquiesced in but which ultimately we’re all responsible for. I follow a few locals on twitter, one heavily engaged in conservation and a catastrophe is looming all because of Ibeefa Inc. but i can’t point fingers cos i’m part of the monster too. Not too sure where i was going with this lol but i’m sure i’ll be over in the summer and will get stuck in to a sunset and forget this post ever happened ---

I saw that tweet too…but that tension is nothing new I feel, or exclusive to Ibiza (from Benidorm to Barcelonas cruise ships and Ebro Airport expansion). Wish it wasn’t the case though. Without sounding too sycophantic, its just a ‘hard agree’ from me. Slightly off Ibiza, but still on the Spanish colonisation tip…as someone who is also lucky enough to live on mainland Spain, I caught this documentary on RTVE, which was an interesting look at ‘generation bikini’…about how mass tourism under Franco was seen from the Spanish eyes… [Somos documentales Democracia bikini: Dictadura, divisas y bikinis - YouTube](https://youtu.be/oA46Cu8wjPU) ---

I dunno, it was a bit cryptic. Maybe there are “them v us” tensions within balearic dj ranks i’m unaware of. Tbf i think people have to take the gigs at the hotels if its a fulltime living. I personally dislike the W and that controlled posey loungey vibe but man’s gotta eat ---

Tbf you hear similar things from people in U.K. living in Cornwall, Devon, Lakes etc bemoaning the second homers/ tourists and their treatment of the region and its inhabitants. I totally get it. Ibiza must be like that x100. ---

I would take those gigs too to be honest, we’ve all got to eat as you say. Just thought it conflicted with the 72hr tourist dig. Maybe he was referring to other DJ’s? Be that as it may, its a tourist destination amongst other things but that’s the main industry so take the good with the bad I guess ---

Yeah the tourism thing is a hot potato. A new BCN runway would be terrible (a whole other thread). Feels to me Spain is reassessing tourism across the board. Everything was so naive in the 60s/70s goldrush. People under 40 are more conscientious, self-confident. Nobody wants to be Europe’s bitch anymore. The country’s changed so much. Whereas late night tv up until the late 90s was wall to wall slapstick soft pornos featuring randy spanish or italian bank managers gazing longingly at swedish tourists on beaches through telescopes. Interspersed with 30min ads for religious or tarot phone-ins (featuring that guy who looked like Roxy-era Brian Eno). Quite a culture shock for a pasty faced English 19 yo on a uni exchange programme. I don’t remember Ibiza getting much publicity on the mainland at the time beyond the occasional outrage on Telecinco about tourists mooning at tv cameras, or uber-hits like Mystic ritmo de la noche crossing over (literally!) In recent years, i think there has been more of an interest in balearic as musical eclecticism rather than a marketed sunset cd series. Padilla was catalan by birth but cdn’t get arrested in BCN. Nobody was interested. There was always a fondness for italo/hi-nrg at venues like Music Box but i was never aware of anyone in bcn using the B word, the likes of cesar de melero came closest. The genre boundaries were pretty rigid as Finn C Notman lamented to me a while back. V hard to get anything new going. It was only much later via Homies, Arnau Obiols and Sonido Tupinamba that I noticed things starting to get more serious on the music side + the L Costa/C Len book. In a way almost reclaiming the heritage. ---

I was going to mention this in an earlier reply…to me at least, it seems that in mainland Spain there is less love / awareness for the Balearic ‘scene’ than that in Northern Europe. For a while, it was seen as either pop or Italo. I guess because it wasn’t as much of a passionate escapist dream for them. My friend said it was like when the English became obsessed with Northern Soul - a label for a genre, and dreams of a place that perhaps didnt really exist to those living there day to day. There is more love / nostaligia for La Ruta Bakalao - last year alone on main TV there was documentaries, a multi part drama…and the book Ruta Grafica. It seems there is a long overdue wave or re-appreciation and pride coming back for all previously overlooked Spanish culture…which i think is great ( Contracultura and Underground in Palau Robert, Barcelona, last year is still one of the best exhibitions i’ve seen on culture in Spain). On a second recommendation tip, in regards to “reassessing tourism across the board. Everything was so naive in the 60s/70s goldrush”…this book caused waves last year and is another must - if you can read Spanish…'España fea’ by Andres Rubio.
