Nu disco - the good bits

Yeah, yeah, we’re all about cassette only IDM and Flexi disc school music project street soul now, but what gems have transcended the genre?

Maurice Fulton is arguably a genre unto himself but this is very much of that time.

Dream team! Rob Mello x Zaki Dee x DJD x Harvey (in the toilet)

The dons. Probably the biggest influence on me. So many to choose from but going with this. S/O to Raj too, of course!

This is a recent, killer mix that I think references the wild creativity of those early days, before it all went to shit…

I’ve never understood Maurice Fulton (do i get banned already on the second day now?) but still love that Reel Houze record which i occasionally play. Don’t think that the best Idjut releases ever will sound totally wrong maybe a little dated.
Here’s another of the big classics which still sounds great

Great topic! I started out dj-ing in 2006/2007 and I bought a lot of nu-disco records back then. I had been more or less ignoring that part of my collection for years and sold about half of them a couple of years ago, but kept a few that I couldn’t part from, for instance:

Lee Douglas - Our Song
Lee Douglas - New York Story

Great topic indeed…some great records in those early days, memories of Harvey’s early morning sets at Ministry, and of The Blue Note, Space etc. These still stand up…

I remember first hearing this at Atlas records in Soho on the listening deck, I think I listened to the whole fifteen minutes without skipping any!

This crept back into my bag in the year pre-lockdown. Love it.
Every time I played it the dance-floor erupted. Sounds amazing on a good system.

While we’re on Paper Recordings - this definitely deserves a mention - a ‘classic’ perhaps?

I don’t know what they ate/drank/smoked in Norway but damn they made some good dance music. Here’s my choice:
