I just think the kids now take other things more seriously. Music might be a vehicle to shout about personal insecurities but that’s the extent of it. Also the nature of production now means the vocal must totally dominate all tracks. Any actual distinctive traits within the music itself are pretty much neutered in all mainstream pop factories whereas it wasn’t always so. So the melancholy is lost. Somebody like Lewis Capaldi could churn out a conveyor belt of ballads but you wouldn’t remember any of them, as opposed to an equivalent tearjerker like A Different Corner which had it all.
Had a bit of a moment to this last night.
Edits of two melancholic 80s classics, imo.
Q Lazarus/Goodbye Horses
The The/Giant
Think these both nail the MO.
One of my all time favourite bands. Rooftops and Hats are works of genius and perfectly capture 80’s Scotland for me. Melancholy, rainy, uplifting and just has that something.
While we’re there, whoever was playing Hostal La Torre in Ibiza a few Sundays ago played Tinseltown In The Rain just as it got dark after sunset and it was magical. Thanks whoever you are

Could easily have been an A side
Reminds me of being 16… I’m in love with my very best friend. From a spectacularly brilliant beautiful downer of an album!
Sublime
God I’ve not thought about this track in absolutely years. I remember hearing it all the time on the radio and loving it, despite my love of all things Indie at the time!
A bonafide melancholic classic!
This thread, basically my Mrs record collection.
Didn’t see any Cocteau Twins but you know, there should be.
this thread has had both songs that i deeply love AND songs that i do-not-love-in-the-least. i won’t yuk anyone else’s yum by pointing out my unloved songs.
still - shows the power of good songwriting and atmospherics - love em or hate em, they left a mark.
I posted Cico Buff earlier on…
Looks like Iceblink Luck & Cherry Coloured Funk had crept into the 90s.
Ah you can’t say that and leave us hanging!
The Cure have been mentioned already but this lesser known track is one of my favourites:
