I think I came across this album via the Acid Archives. Definitely has that clunky off-rhythm sound. Good for Xmas!

Such a good comp. Lucky to have the label right here in Chicago. They frequently have warehouse purges with good discounts. I got the Bedhead triple LP boxset test pressing for $7. A prouder moment of my collecting years.

Here’s another Numero release from a young band - Noise Addict from Bondi in Sydney. I used to work with one of them in a record store when I was the manager. I thought at first he was an annoying upstart, but I quickly realised he was a great kid. They were signed to Grand Royal at one point and toured with the Beasties etc. they also supported Sonic Youth, Fugazi and Pavement. Not bad for a bunch of 14-15 year olds.

Dino, Desi and Billy were the sons of Dean Martin, Desi Arnez and Lucille Ball, along with friend Billy Hinsche. Nepo babies with great connections, they auditioned for Sinatra and landed on his Reprise label and were produced by Lee Hazelwood and backed by the Wrecking Crew!

This memory lurched into my head this afternoon. Back in the 00s I used to work a lot with Save the Children. I was in their offices in Farringdon when I walked past someone’s desk who was playing this absolutely beautiful recording of children singing in harmony. I asked them about it and they said it was recorded in a child soldier resettlement camp in the DRC a couple of weeks previously.
These were all children who’d been demobilised from the war and had been on opposing sides - they were singing this beautiful harmony together when they’d recently been shooting at each other.
I was obsessed with this bit of music and tried to get them to release it as a single, I was convinced I could get Damon Albarn to remix or promote it as he was in his Mali Music phase (and weirdly I saw him and Justine Frischman doing their Christmas shopping in Selfridges at around the same time, I nearly asked him but I bottled it).
I made a few enquiries but Save the Children weren’t into it as they didn’t have the copyright or any record of who the children were - by this time they would all have been repatriated to the villages and families they’d been taken from.
Anyway it was one of the most beautiful things I’d ever heard and the story behind it blew me away. So I thought I’d write it down and now I can forget about it for another 20 years.
