We got our single fags and a couple of red top matches for 10p from the Hobby Shop, the owner of which was very much rumoured to be a bit ‘handy’ when showing eager kids the trains in the back of the shop.
He had wooden display cases on the front counter. 3 Sports Mixture for 2p.
Jars of all the best sweets. Army & Navy tablets, Herbal Tablets, Midget Gems for removal of lovely silver amalgam fillings, Floral Gums, Wine Gums and Bon Bons.
He used to sell us fireworks as well - after school, in school uniform! He’d say to us “If anyone asks where you got them, you didn’t get them from me”
When I started smoking aged 13/14, Number 6 were 49p for a ten deck, JPS were 50p!

After I progressed from buying singles, it was a packet of Rothman Royals for around £1.20 and you inexplicably got 23 in a deck. There was a local pub that had a machine that was in the entrance before the bar area v

I remember Royals. 23 pack. From memory did they not take 3 out in the machines so you got 20? Standard 20 deck you got 17. Maybe it was 16, its been a while?
One of my ex GFs smoked Royals and by default, so did I as I was forever poncing off her

I’ve only ever smoked two fags in my life.
The first one was a Consulate on the top deck of a bus back from my teenage girlfriend’s, made me so sick that I couldn’t be in the same room as one for years.
The second one was when my (now) wife was working as a barmaid in Digbeth in Birmingham, I had a Senior Service with an old guy sat at the bar.

Before I settled into my solid 60 Marlboro Red a day habit from about 19 onwards, I used to smoke these thinking i was well sophisticated

In my town there was a 24hr fag machine outside one of the newsagents that only sold 10s, and was accessable to anyone old enough to have the strength to pull out the drawer.
We started young.
