In Memoriam…

Funnily enough I have been playing this version of I Wish I Didn’t Love You a lot lately – recently reissued too:

OK it is a cover so not Angie’s voice but I really like this dub version

A mate just reminded me of this monster version, triggering a frantic but fruitless search.
I remember buying it in Vinyl Junkies all those years ago but have no recollection of when I last saw it. Bloody annoying.

This came up on another thread a couple of weeks ago. Used to rinse this one and have an exceptionally sticky copy now! DL here :arrow_forward:︎ Smoke Chronic | Angie Stone/African Brothers | Nuffwish

I’ve got this … also not sure where. Goes cheap on discogs but it’s still a killer I think.

Has DJ Funk died? I saw RP Boo saying something on twitter, has this been confirmed anywhere? A real shame if true…

Sorry - deleted - only read the headline, the article in Mixmag refers to raising money for funeral costs, and the headline made me think he has passed.

deleted post - report of Roy Ayers death. May be false

Please let it be false. Not my man Roy!

Oh fuck it’s true. RIP Roy. Had the pleasure of seeing him live numerous times over the years. He seemed like such a cool cat. Beyond gutted.

Oh man that’s so sad. I guess (to state the obvious) we’re living in an age when all the people we grew up dancing to from the age of 10 onwards are sadly passing. Playing their music is such a nice way to remember them… Three classics from Roy Ayers (who hopefully is still with us)…

I’m now having some doubts. Patrick Forge posted a tribute on his socials in response to a post Pete BBE had made, which was later taken down.

Starting to show in news sources…

In a statement shared with Variety, the Ayers family said that he died yesterday after suffering from a long illness. “It is with great sadness that the family of legendary vibraphonist, composer, and producer Roy Ayers announce his passing which occurred on March 4, 2025 in New York City after a long illness,” they said, describing him as “highly influential and sought after as a music collaborator.”

I very briefly met him after he played at Ronnie Scott’s. The gang I was with were dancing which was not allowed, the bouncers told us to sit down :joy: anyway as we left he was doing the meet and greet and called over ‘hey you were the cats dancing!’.

RIP Roy a musical giant and absolute don of the highest order.

This is truly gutting. He was a massive part of my musical journey from a very young age. His music has influenced generations and more to come.

I too met him after a gig his drummer got talking to me and my wife at the bar and I told him how much of a fan I was and he took us upstairs to the green room to meet Roy and we sat for about an hour laughing and joking and talking about his music. I spoke about 2000 black and fela, gold mink records, ramp Sylvia striplin and uno melodic he was like dam to his crew “this cat knows more about my music than me” it really moved me he was so approachable and easy to chat with and so welcoming. A memory I will never forget.

We also had a chuckle about “we live in Tesco’s baby”

Thanks for the music Roy !

A true legend for me!

RIP Roy, one of the very best. What a legacy.

Indeed, what a legacy. And not just the music. I loved reading Andrew and Paul’s stories. Sounds like a beautiful person.

As an artist, he was one of the few that bridged all my musical worlds: Kent soul boy, London rare groover and aging obsessive.
