Orbit was someone who seemed to have been around forever, starting with bassomatic in my case, sprinkling gold dust on everything he touched. I think he achieved a rare thing in marrying pop and dance culture and somehow not losing his cool. Maybe because he had such an ear for a memorable tune?
two nights Im unlikely to forget, thousands of people losing their shit on Brighton beach when “Pure Shores” came on and Harvey dropping “Aquarium” as we all filed into Freddies. Masterclass selections which really captured the mood

William Orbit’s Strange Cargo productions made me think about music in an entirely different way. I was working on a fishing boat in remote Alaska, in the middle of the Bering Sea–I had a discman with a few CDs and every night I would listen to “Water from a Vine Leaf” before nodding off to sleep in a ship’s bunk, rocked by the sea. The way he builds that track, adding elements and then dropping them out…genius.
