Thought I’d start a general advice thread for those times you probably already know the answer to your question, but need some encouragement or a voice of reason. Can be music related or not.
My first conundrum - I’m currently turning over my record collection so I can afford some new music. I collected Moodymann albums and 12"s like crazy back in the day and have around 20 releases, none of which I have played in any capacity for a long time. Do I set them free and make a bit of coin, or do I hang on to them, knowing it’s unlikely I’ll ever buy or own them again and may regret my decision?
As a counterpoint, I’d sell them all. That music is super popular right now AND some new fans will be thrilled to own a piece of this history. If you’re not playing them and they’re sought after, why hoard them for a better moment? Those are all available digitally when you want to revisit them.
I should mention that I’ve been selling incredibly sentimental records recently which has been difficult. Limited releases, test pressings, rare stuff. But I rarely (if ever) bring it to a gig so what value does it have on my shelves? Someone chomping at the bit for a copy will enjoy the ownership more than you will.
The fact that I don’t gig any more makes it easier for me to part with the dancefloor end of my collection and focus on my “old man listening to music at home” tunes.
edit - uploaded a bunch of MM plus Andres and Theo Parrish releases.
Rip them and sell. Although, after a few house moves in recent years, I have become pretty unsentimental about getting shot of the majority of my records (and books).
