Have started putting on records to just work to and enjoy during the day which weirdly is a fine balance as the music can’t do too much but you also want things you really enjoy… It’s really nice just playing albums. This is my current favourite. Jessica Pratt.
Beautiful album and performer. She’s amazing in concert.
Find myself listening frequently to Mr Sylvian’s aptly titled '“Brilliant trees”. Extreme familiarity makes it easy to listen to whatever I’m doing - but it still delights.
Sholto’s “Letting Go of Forever” - Cinematic, lush and jazzy with flourishes of exotica and lounge sounds that are never cloying or overwrought. It’s a double LP with 26 excellent tracks(!)
Another shout for David Sylvian, but for Gone to Earth, which I think I must know every single note of even when playing while I’m working.
The other album I constantly return to is Inarticulate Speech of the Heart. There’s something about Van’s spiritual chuntering away and the mid-80s production that helps me write.
Good topic this. Always put music on when I’m doing stuff around the house, especially when the wife is out. Not necessarily listening too closely, but just sort of filling the space nicely.
The last 3 such albums were,
The Orb - UF Orb
David Axelrod - Songs Of Innocence
Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
This might be a bit on the nose but,

He is on fire! Very active chap. This should be really good: “Sholto plays David Axelrod” at the Jazz Cafe on Wednesday, 28/10/2026.
Shy One this last month or so, its fantastic.
Recent home spins include:
Sturgill Simpson - A Sailor’s Guide To Earth
Lana Del Rey - Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Boulevard?
The Dylan Group - Ur-Klang Search
and this, my current spin. check out the artwork - sensational!
Sea Change and Morning Phase are still stunning perennials, I’m hoping Ride Lonesome completes the arc.
Couple of nice things I was lucky enough to stumble across in 2017 when I was doing more work in music, opening promos and chatting to PR and stuff.
Mark McGrain is a New Orleans session trombonist and I’d just watched Treme and was doing some research and stumbled into his world. A drumless trio with John Boutte on vox for some of it:
And This Is The Kit (Kate Stables), her fourth album Moonshine Freeze. File under folk.
