Favourite 90s dance mag?

I loved Muzik and Jockey Slut. Used to hunt down the recommended tunes religiously. XlR8R is also a good shout. Articles were great.

Muzik mixtape comp has a lot to answer for as well. Some of the names that came through that were astounding. I think Matt Radio Slave won once.

Jockey Slut! Loved it when they started up again as Disco Pogo.

Keep On was a good one… That had loads of great stuff in it.

still got every issue

This is 80’s but i’d pay money for scans of all The Street Scene mags from Street Sounds.

I have stacks of early 2000s Dazed and Confused, nearly tossed 'em but started going through and even my wife was like “you have to save these.”

much more 00’s but i still have loads of straight no chasers and plastiks magazines. not totally the scene that i was into but the art and type and photography was always so good, and there was always an article or two that i learned something from. and wax poetics, obvs.

but yeah, jockey slut and keep on - and magic feet when i could find them. in the earlier 90s - XLR8R, urb before it went slick.

and as hard as it is to believe - details in the late 80’s. early issues were my intro to the NYC ballroom scene and they even printed top tens. if you looked at a details magazine from 88, you wouldn’t know it from the american lad’s mag it turned into.

Used to like Urb because it covered the West Coast so it introduced me to a lot of new DJs and artists

Sorry I don’t, this was just an image I grabbed off the web. I wish I did keep them but I chucked them years ago.

Just in case anyone doesn’t know - all issues of muzik available here

Still regret chucking out a Soul Underground baseball cap I sent off for in the late eighties, used to be a great mag. Got rid of all but a couple years ago, but picked this up when it came out:

DAVID LUBICH - Catch The Beat: The Best Of Soul Underground 1987-91 - Boomkat

Not 90’s, but does anybody know if Record (Culture) Magazine ( Issues — Record Culture Magazine (record-magazine.com)) are bringing out any more issues?

Last one was in 2022 with Harvey on the cover.

Downside to Muzik & their ilk of that era was that they could be a bit laddish. Upside–for me, at least–was that generally the UK seemed way ahead of the US in terms of celebrating & supporting dance (and soul music) in the mainstream, like Radio 1 Essential Mix. Also the writing was generally better–certainly more wit and funnier.

Not sure. I’ve been trying to reach the editor but to no avail. I hope so as it was very well done.

Fingers crossed, it’s a great mag.

I’ve been quietly gutted that it’s not appeared for a while. It’s a great read.

Been really enjoying picking these up recently on ebay (except the 2 issues that are a bit too pricey).
Remember skimming them back in the day in Virgin or at a mates - his older brother was buying them.
The noodle article is in Issue 4 (the “leisure” special) that has a pinball machine on the cover. Drills down into a West Coast (ramen) vs East Coast (soba) debate lol…

Also features an article where Vincent Gallo interviews himself and is typically unhinged.

Nice one Mark, The noodle debate did seem ahead of its time :joy:
Got me going out and searching for the varieties.
Was there a muscle car article along with the Miami Bass stuff?
Maybe I need to track a few copies down. :+1:

I messaged them to see if I could get any info, and apparently issue 11 is in progress, but the editor has just had his second child which has delayed it a little (and would explain his lack of response).
