Battle Of The Albums Two- Moon Safari v Music Has The Right To Children

Yeah, that’s right

I had never tried LSD until three years ago in lockdown. I realise it’s a huge cliché or whatever but listening to MHTRTC now it is hugely evocative of the ‘logic’ of that experience for me, if that makes any sense at all…

i offered myself as a test subject of LSD at an early age, and i really wished i had waited longer for the best possible musical control element of it. at the time i was trying to get my hendrix-loving friends to try out cocteau twins and skinny puppy but instead we had to compromise on things like the ‘pretty in pink’ soundtrack and love and rockets.

that said, i did have one led zep-loving pal who, on one of those first trips - just wanted to listen to fleetwood mac’s “gypsy” over and over again, which at the time i thought was terrible. there was something about that song that was greatly comforting to him. and in retrospect, there’s something balearic about that album. way better than me trying to push “cleanse fold and manipulate” on the poor guy.

everyone wants their first time to be perfect, but the younger you start - the less control you’re afforded. aw well.

Not to hijack the thread - but I’m glad I waited. It was a glorious day and an incredibly powerful and near-perfect (I took too much and kept coming up) experience. Never again will I take trees and flowers for granted.

I wasn’t in the frame of mind to be digging around for music and so just grabbed the first record on top of the pile which happened to be Jered/Jex Opolis’s “Ravines”. It played on repeat the whole day and was somehow the perfect soundtrack. I always meant to send him a note to express my gratitude…

I had the Air Modular mix 12 and really liked that, but moon safari really rubbed me the wrong way, it felt like they were going intentionally commercial, or whatever the right word is here. On Paper, MHTRTC was everything that I was into back then, but in practice it never really got to me, it was a big deal back then, and is a cult album now, but it goes to show, you can only like what you like.

I wish ROYBIV and Olson were a lot longer.

But there is also this…
