was really surprised to learn that the hip hop DJs in NYC were playing on rotarys well into the 90s because that’s what the bigger clubs were kitted out with.

A lot of those guys were pretty versatile party DJs so could cover disco, house, dancehall or whatever and play accordingly. You still have old school dudes like Tony Touch who are equally at home in house or hip-hop.

and now we have people on social media complaining that the venue had a Pioneer S9 instead of an S11 or that they cant possibly manage using mixer X because they’re only used to mixer Y.

had a successful pop-dance chart hit in 1991, signed to a major but it went tits up, re-emerged with a string of hard house 12s in the early 00s and now manages a small buy to let portfolio.
