That quote comes from this record
“I was wearing a pair of white sneakers, and a pair of white shorts, and I had a T-shirt on with an inscription that read on the front of it ‘Earth, Wind and Fire’. You could not tell me that I was not good to go!”
‘In The Dark’ is a pretty solid album too.
Ah, yes.
All this talk of Roy, the outpouring of affection, the wholly deserved respect. I’ve been letting it carry me for the last couple of days because - as mentioned on other threads - his death has touched me in a way that I would have never expected.
But throughout all the adulation I’ve been thinking about the night I played some records before/after his gig at the Nia Centre in Manchester in…I dunno, it was probably '93. Possibly '94.
He didn’t play any of the classics. At least, that’s what I remember. I guess it hadn’t filtered through to him that we wanted to hear the tracks from his amazing earlier material, back to He’s Coming. My recollection is that he only played the cheesier '80s stuff and made a huge deal out of Poo Poo La La. It went on for ages.
With the benefit of 30 years’ distance, I can appreciate something in this track. But back then, I was so disappointed. The 20-something me had no time for it. I was so disappointed that he thought this was what we wanted to hear. “Let me kiss you on your poo poo la la?” No. I wanted conscious Roy, not cheesy Roy.
And it was this youthful intolerance that stopped me asking to meet him, which would’ve been totally doable. So reading peoples’ stories of hanging out with him, and discovering the amazing person he was, I’m just pissed at the younger me for being so short sighted and intolerant.
Grr.
A mate has found some old pictures from final days at school (May 1990). That’s me top row with the black polo neck. My best mate Tom to my left with a hideous permed bob. We were the ravers. John The Goth far right, used to crimp his hair. 35 years ago, where does the time go
Would be interested to know what kind of system was used to decide who got to stand and who was on their knees. Im imagining something arcane and violent as if from Lindsay Anderson’s ‘If’
More likely the misogynist teacher who took the photo wanted to girls on the floor
bleurgh.
Got a slight touch of the Dave Gahan’s about you!
Saw this yesterday and naturally thought of @AndrewFlying and this thread lol
It has been said. Not recently though
We sold so many of those and t-shirts. That bag has to be about 25 years old. These were the ones we used before UDG came about. Good times good memories
Got this in Kensington market flying 91/92 I think.
Still in good nick. Said to my mate one day I’m gonna work in here and he looked at me and said yeah right and laughed. Ended up managing and owning it.
Tempted to do a run of limited t-shirts.
Nice! That’s exactly when and where mine comes from. Always a buzz about that place of a Saturday.
early 90s Id been into Kenn Mkt, had a browse around & was on the bus back to my mates
One of the girls from shop got on bus with 2 or 3 flying bags with all the mail outs
Tried to engage in conversation ( Go to the Nottingham events all time etc)
I forgot the London / talk to strangers on public transport rule
She either completely ignored me or moved seats
Might have been time I had to wait until Rocky was serving someone else as I didnt want to buy Muzik Express of him
Aah, brilliant! It’s possible that I bought my copy of it from him - I don’t remember. Just always remember his smile and chat in the shop - so welcoming and helpful. There was also the white board with special nights coming up that were listed - pre-Resident Advisor - often a Tony Humphries etc 6 hour set. Snippets of important info that you had to catalog toute-de-suite because there was no other source.
Edit: wasn’t like you’d have been pulling out a filofax to take notes!
I had a Flying t-shirt c 1991/2 I think in red, thought I was the bees whiskers I did , never got to the shop so must’ve been mail order. Nice tee.
Possibly Jo Mills mate.
