I’ve been compiling a playlist from this thread. It’s interesting how disparate everyone’s choices are. Almost no crossover between people’s lists.

I didn’t know a single track on the playlist previously and I only know a handful of the artists. Having listened a few times now, I suspect much of it will ‘grow on me’.

My quick take is that you are a bunch of mellow bastards.

Mostly listen to music on headphones in work which definitely influences my listening habits. Looks like I’m in advanced stages of going full jazz dad.

  • Vijay Iyer - Compassion. Modern classy ECM jazz.

  • Messthetics & James Brandon Lewis. Fugazi rhythm section go jazz.

  • Julian Lage - Speak to Me. On Blue Note so ultimately jazz but covers a lot of styles. Beautiful melodies abound.

  • Philip Glass Solo - his lockdown album. Beautiful.

  • Amaro Freitas - YY. Brazilian oddness. Can be challenging in a good way and then will break your heart in other places.

  • Jlin- Akoma. Her best album? Philip Glass and Bjork guest on trap/footwork/whatevs your having yourself

  • Shabaka - Perceive its Beauty….Ditches the sax for the flute. Lovely

  • Arooj Aftab - Night Reign. Makes feeling sad feel good.

  • Syclops - Black Eye. Maurice Fulton turns it out again and giving me hope that I can still enjoy a proper banger in my dotage.

  • Mabe Fratti - Sentir que no sabes. Merits the hype. Mexican cellist with inevitable comparisons to Arthur Russell. Some real ear worms here.

  • Total Blue on Music from Memory. Balearic by way of 80s LA noir/Blade Runner

  • Gillian Welch - Woodland. Folk, country, soul, Nashville, Ashville, etc

  • Nala Sinephro - Endlessness. Everyone’s favorite harpist, right?

  • gum.mp3 - Black Life, Red Planet. Dude based in Baltimore, relaxed drum n bass with lovely samples/live instruments on top. Check the Bandcamp release for excellent housey bonus tracks

  • MJ Lenderman - Manning Fireworks. Surprised I liked this so much. RIYL Neil Young/Crazy Horse, Pavement, The Band. Fantastic lyrics

  • Roge - Curyman II. Lovely modern take on tropacalia. String sections arranged by Arthur Verocai!!

Comps

  • Palms Trax - Sound of Love International. Every single track on this is a winner.

  • Ghana Special 2 - Electronic Highlife. Some tunes on this comp could give Hafi Deo a run for its money as best tune ever.
